    Hello,

So usually when booking say an economy rward flight London to Johannessburg it’s around 16 500 points each way but currently BA is quoting me 30 000 which is a massive jump. I checked the table on HFP and it also quotes around 16 000 points. Reward Flights Finder is quoting 60 000 for an economy flight one way so something is out of whack there too.

Did I miss a massive increase in points redemption as admittedly I haven’t booked a reward flight for around 10 months but seems like a huge jump!

How much are you paying in taxes/charges?

BA will often quite multiple options for you to use more or less points versus less or more cash. You should see these when you proceed through the booking. The sweet spot will be the one quoted on the HFP article.

You need to click the ‘other pricing options’ tab for the lowest avios (but higher cash element) options to display

Ah I see thanks, shame its quoting £900 + 33 000 points for a 2 flights using a companion voucher when 2 flights cash is only £1300! Guess the real saving is on business

For two people with a 241 LHR-JNB rtn, I get:
    60000 Avios + £ 300.00

    45000 Avios + £ 500.00

    32500 Avios + £ 680.00

    26000 Avios + £ 840.00

    18000 Avios + £ 920.00

    11400 Avios + £ 1,000.00

If you have the Avios, the lowest cash option isn’t too bad.

Ah I am doing for July next year so maybe taxes etc increases are built into it?

BA Avios flights may be good value if any of these apply:
    – booked last minute
    – premium cabins
    – one ways
    – booked 355 days out on high-cost days/routes
    – where flexibility is important

A return, many months ahead of time, in economy, is none of the above unless you need flexibility, in which case it is still a bargain over a fully refundable ticket.

Gotcha! – makes complete sense, thanks for the summary 🙂
