Forums Payment cards American Express Amex account with own & supplementary card

  • APL03 31 posts

My wife has just received her own BA PP card. Her Amex account / app currently has her supplementary card linked to my BA PP card.

She just activated the card via the app but it gave her an error saying it couldn’t be added to the existing account and she needs to create a new one. Is this because of the supplementary card on there already? Amex chat were a bit clueless!

Does anyone know if she can immediately apply for a supplementary card for me on her account, or whether she needs to wait? Her credit limit is £1000 so I’m not sure how we can hit £6k spend in 3 months?!

Both Player 2 and I have both Plats and supplementary Plats. We never experienced this. It could be an app issue.

We applied for supp cards few days after we started using the card itself.

The app sometimes takes time to recognise new cards. Best to add the new card on a desktop. Use the same account where she currently has the supp.
Once added on desktop, the app will automatically update.

Wait for a few days and then apply for the supp as there’s usually a bonus for first supp card.

You can payoff the balance mid month. Spend 1k, pay it off then after a few days, start spending again.

Thanks for the replies. Spoke to Amex and it seems to be an issue with having an existing supplementary card as the first registered card to an online account. There is a way around it which involves cancelling her supplementary card and re-applying for it but that’s far too much hassle so setting up a new account is the best way forward.

Does anyone know if the bonus for applying for a supplementary card (3,000 currently) has to go through the link on the webpage here:

    https://www.americanexpress.com/uk/benefits/supplementary-cards/

Or is it automatically applied? My wife applied before I saw the page above!

No you don’t need to go through a specific link, the bonus is for the first supplementary card added irrespective of whether you use a weblink or go through the app.

You can remove a card from online servicing with the Amex website, without having to cancel it. This might be the solution.

I’d say it may or may not be possible with little rhyme or reason …

I have successfully added supp card to my main account and my wife, but never been able to add BA supp to my wife’s Amex despite speaking to them. Gave up and just created a separate account … not ideal but there’s only so many hours in the day!

I thought of this too & asked the agent if this would work and he said it wouldn’t. Like another poster my wife gave up and just created a new account…

I’ve since tried to add my new supplementary card to my online account and that didn’t work either!

That’s nonsense. Player 2 had just supplementary cards and recently added main BAPP card.
