Forums Payment cards American Express Amex application unsuccessful

  • 17 posts

Hi all. I’ve previously had AmEx Gold and Platinum before multiple times. Always paid on time and had no issues. I’ve cancelled the last one 4 years ago after the free year ended. Waited for the 2 years to elapse so I can be eligible for the bonus again. But since then I keep getting rejected. I asked them to do a review and they didn’t even bother to get back to me. Spoke to someone now and they said the relevant team who completed the review rejected it based on my history of only keeping the AmEx for a year or so. So they didn’t want to issue me with one. Is this the new norm? Any ideas if I should bother reapplying

They see you as someone who “churns” and they don’t like that behaviour now and seemingly are getting tougher. Doubtful they will change their minds.

Yes so it seems. Disappointing to be honest. How long will they hold my data before I can reapply?

With Amex it is all anecdotal info since we dont have any real insider knowledge. Churning was not an issue previously but seems it is now

Why I’ve always kept a card open

Ever is a long time. The criteria and systems might change at some point or you may move address and they don’t correctly tie you back to an old account etc

But it’s the risk of churning.

Recently turned down for a platinum application. No problem with credit record etc, last card was 2 years ago. Has anyone managed to overturn the decision?

Why would it be disappointing? At some point you realise your actions have consequences.

Try to lower your credit in other cards and retry in a couple months.

Hearing more and more of these stories as of recent. But fair play Amex clearly are clamping down on repeat churners and declining their business.

If they really didn’t want churners, then surely the two years would be significantly increased?

Don’t try to bring logic here!

    @phantomchickenz
    – it’s complicated! Amex in the UK wants churners, just not too many. They moved from six months to two years, so still considerably less than the once in a lifetime rule of the US, although that may in practice mean every six/seven years, the US credit cycle.

Amex UK really struggles to get customers so they just have to accept industry busting welcome bonuses and retentions. Whatever the cost, it’s critical for Amex to be able to continue to say to investors that customer acquisition and retention remain strong.

You can observe chaos at Amex as a casual observer, so imagine the mess one hears is the norm at Europe HQ if you speak to insiders. That’s being polite.

Change of terms re pro-rata refunds suddenly pulled when Plat fee increase announced and still too scared to implement a year on, last year’s BAPP 70k offer only announced by BA, the failure to clarify whether Plat dining/HN will continue in 2025 etc. Totally unprofessional.

Other providers are still eating Amex’s lunch and that’s not going to change unless Amex improves its offer which looks remarkably dated/tired.
