Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club BAPP Amex “Companion Voucher” query

  • 223 posts

    Hi all.

I am currently on track to hit 10k for a voucher soon with BA PP.

My use for that would be to finally try a long-haul BC flight to Vegas likely.

I was playing around, and I’d fly out from Belfast to LHR, then LHR to LAS. Then do the same in return, so in total 4 flights, per person as such.

If I were to book that, it’s coming in at 380k Avios plus £900 taxes. With the voucher, if I understand correctly, we could both fly that for 190k Avios and £900?

Thanks! Hope I understand the TCs correctly.

This would be the per person cost. Just checking that you know the taxes/fees/charges are payable on both tickets.

The figures you quote for LAS in Club seem much too high. See recent article.

380k + £900 is the total price if I were to possess that much Avios for 2 people travelling. This is to get from Belfast to London, then from there onwards to LAS. I just picked a random period in early January (off-peak) to illustrate.

I am talking about, if booked with a voucher, the taxes would remain the same (as they are quoted for 2 people) and the Avios cost would halve – no? The BA PP voucher allow me to book 1 person for Avios and the other can come along?

If I did 1 PAX, it’s 190k Avios plus £450. So I assume with the companion voucher it’d be 190k plus £900 taxes?

Table shows 90k off-peak for one leg. I’d come out to that too, but I am also taking a short hop across from N. Ireland too which I guess is why my trip is 190k!

@Simey – did you click on the “more pricing options” tab or are those figures the ones BA presented first?

Total Price (Including all taxes, fees, and carrier charges)
    190000 Avios + £ 450.00

    More pricing options

    You can select when paying
    160000 Avios + £ 670.00
    137500 Avios + £ 845.00
    112000 Avios + £ 1,170.00
    87000 Avios + £ 1,460.00
    61250 Avios + £ 1,760.00

Yes – this is the price per pax when using the Max amount of Avios. My goal is to hit 190k and use the voucher to book 2 PAX on this for 190k plus the £900 taxes (or there abouts, may or may not change by 2024). Is my understanding correct? Feel like the above comments maybe misread what I am asking potentially.

Yes, default is the one that is max Avios. I am aiming to get 190k Avios, take my partner on the leg with the voucher to match 2 for the price of 1, and pay the taxes of 2 PAX, which is currently £900 as 1 PAX’s cost is £450 plus 190k. The Avios will be halved, but taxes will not which in turn results in a 190k Avios flight for the both of us with £900 taxes. Is this not the correct understanding?

Did you try flying from Dublin (via Lhr) to compare the avios and taxes ? I find it worth the trip south.

    Yes that is correct.

What is confusing is how you wrote your additional post which then caused some confusion with those replying but we got there in the end.

I did, but it would cost more in Avios but less in taxes – so not something that’s worth for me. Plus transport costs to get there, come back, longer travel time. All that makes it an unnecessary detour this time!

But regarding my question above, it’s not about saving taxes or Avios – just whether that I understand the usage of the new style BAPP voucher correctly.

Sorry about that, guess maybe it read differently to others than the way it sounded in my head!

So TL;DR is that whatever the journey would cost for 2 PAX in Avios plus taxes, the voucher makes it cost 50% of the stated Avios, but taxes remain the same. Which in itself is fine, I did not buy my points just got them from SUB and hotels and shopping that I had to do. So to pay potentially £450 per person of cash to book a Business Class experience is nothing in my view.

Have you thought of booking the long-haul return LHR-LAS as an avios reward booking using the 241 voucher and then just booking a separate cash fare from Belfast to London in economy? You will probably save yourself some avios and the business class experience from Belfast to London won’t be anything special, especially for such a short flight!

@rosco85 – the Belfast connection won’t cost anything extra in cash or avios, and having the flights on one PNR would mean that luggage would be checked all the way through and passengers would have greater rights in the event of any delays and cancellations.
Departing from Dublin would not give a free connection as these only apply to UK airports, which is where confusion may be arising.

Ah ok, my mistake. I thought if you had a domestic sector you were charged the avios and taxes on this as well when making a reward booking.

Not on long haul – previously there was a local airport tax charged but this seems to have gone since the change to RFS.

I currently have 2 Avios flights booked for SEptember 2023 LHR-EZE using an Amex 241 voucher, which I need to cancel. Can I cancel them online or do I need to call BA? Can’t seem to find a cancel option in manage my booking. Do I get everything refunded less £35 pp admin fee?

You can change the date and time of a reward booking online but you need to call up BA to change the destination or cancel a reward booking with a 241 voucher. They will refund your avios and cash (minus the £35pp fee) and also your voucher as long as it’s still in date.

I was wondering why the Avios cost was the same whether I do the connection or not – learn something new.

It makes sense to do it as one for the reasons you’ve said indeed. This’ll be my goal, hopefully 2023 (Sept / Oct) time 🙂

Thanks all for confirming my logic is right.
