Forums Payment cards American Express Amex card offers, anyone else noticed a lot less of late?

  • 201 posts

As title, anyone noticed a big drop in the number of save to card offers on amex cards over the last few months?

I’ve got four amex, normally have a lot, even to the point on my bonvoy card it was over the 100 mark, so they didn’t all show.

These days however, currently sitting with 9 offers on two cards and 15 on another and 17 on the bonvoy card. Other half’s cards are the same.

Just to see if anyone else has noticed the same, as our spending hasn’t changed, just a lot less offers.

    Yes – others have mentioned.

    Mine have also tanked.

I missed the Shop Small (summer version) too unless I am too early off the mark?

No shop smalp summer edition, though to be fair that was never really a thing in the past typically anyway.

No doubt JDB would say it’s because there is no Amex cache any more so can’t attract offers. Personally I think that once summer hols are over they’ll appear again. Or when the interest rises bite and people spend less and customers need enticements.

Modays are usually an active day for new offers, and especially the first Monday of any month. Zilch this week. I remain hopeful for August. The NH Hotels offer was quite generous and is still in play.

I only have 9 on my new Amex Plat (excluding the recurring Harvey Nics credit and the 2 x £150 dining credits) but have 48 on the BAPP

    @Peter
K – the cachet problem lies with the Platinum Card, not Amex overall. They have regrettably debased that product and seem remarkably unwilling to address the obvious problems, such that the product will continue to shed customers. Re Shop Small, last summer they did it in June; I believe Amex funds that in full as part of their ESG responsibilities, but I suspect it doesn’t work all that well for them or retailers/potential retailers.

With offers overall, I have never had as many as the 100 offers reported above (but have also never had the Bonvoy card) but for the last five years until maybe Easter this year, my PRG has had significantly more offers than my BAPP, but currently I have 29 on PRG and 42 on BAPP plus the identical number (but many different offers) on a BAPP supp. Most are increasingly uninteresting.

There has been a drop off but also I would say a large increase in the way they target the offers. I have still got a good amount on my Cent card (70ish) but only 5 on my BA Card. Equally another BA card I am a sup for has about 50. So it really isn’t card specific, more person combined with card specific as two Business Plat cards have some overlapping offers but overall one has about 40 offers and the other 8.

I guess its also what retailers will sign up for, hotels are unlikely to give discounts away over the summer, although I was surprised by a couple high end groups appearing, but the Hilton / Marriott / IHG probably wont be back until after the summer. Retailers seem to maybe be moving away from Amex Offers, unless they are bespoke and want exposure, equally if things start to soften much more then things could change quickly over summer, but I do feel regardless now Amex is much more about targeting offers and offering this to the retailers. For instance a recent restaurant / bar offer only seemed to go to people with a card address in London area, which was their local catchment.

I have 42 offers on my BAPP which is somewhat down on the heady days of 90 that I have previously had.

That said I rarely save any of the offers because the majority are not that interesting. I’ve got some from retailers I’ve never heard of before and some that, such as the Samsung one, I won’t save as I’m not currently looking for what they’re selling. The rest I just don’t need.

I guess Amex knows what it is doing and that the offers do get utilised by somebody otherwise they wouldn’t exist.

I also wonder if the reduction is down to lack of consumer confidence and a lot of people belt-tightening?

I’m blown away by people having 40 offers, never mind larger numbers.

My recently-issued plat has 14 saved offers and none unsaved; not much is offered and 80% of what is, is extremely niche (high-end hotel with a few locations; bespoke travel booking service with poor prices; tiny speciality retailers, typically).

It’s feels a bit clown-world disorganised as well – for example a Harvey Nicks cashback in worthwhile size appeared a few days *after* I’d done a £47 transaction to use the H2 £50 credit, making my interest in Harvey Nicks entirely dormant for the next 5.5 months. If the offer had appeared before the spend they might have got a lot more from me, and the Dell offer typically shows up there only after I’ve used it already.

If it is recently issued it will take a while to start getting higher number of offers.
Those 2 offers you mentioned are recurring. You should have waited until they appeared before making the purchases.

My Plat never has a significant number of offers, that’s always been the other cards.
