Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Amex companion voucher – adding return after flying out

  • 10 posts

Apologies in advance if this has been covered elsewhere.

In Jan 2024 I booked a one way flight from GLA – MIA using a companion voucher and flew in March 2024. Today I phoned BA to make use of the ‘return’ segment of the companion voucher, to book flights from BGI – GLA (BGI is a shorter distance than MIA to the UK) for Nov. However, I was advised that this was not possible as I had already flown using the companion voucher and I should have booked the BGI return at the time of the original booking. Is this correct?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

BA is correct. The voucher is applicable to one booking, whether it be a single, return, or more complex itinerary. You’re trying to use it for two separate bookings. Had you called before travelling the outbound, you would have been able to add the return.

I thought all you needed to do was to book and fly the outbound leg, before the companion voucher expired, then you could but fly back whenever you like. I would have thought the outbound leg was a open jaw ticket which allowed me to add a return when it suited?

That’s the rule about when you can travel, not when you can book, i.e. you can take the inbound leg after the voucher expires. But additionally, BA will only allow you to add the return separately if it hasn’t been released when you book the outbound, which wasn’t the case here if you booked that in January.

Once the outbound has been flown the voucher is considered fully used even if you’ve only used it on a one way flight.

There isn’t any sort of ‘half’ voucher concept.

Thank-you all for the information and advice, it has been very helpful 😉
