Forums Payment cards American Express Amex & energy suppliers

  • 3 posts

    Hi all,

I’m looking to change my energy supplier. Currently with Ovo but am considering switching to a provider which accepts top ups by Amex.

Is Octopus still the fans’ favourite?

Are there any other providers that I should consider? Just done a quick comparison search on MSE and it has also recommended e.on next, EDF, Home Energy and Outfox The Market.

Grateful for your views – and if anyone is able to share a referral code, I’d be happy to use it.

    Thank you in advance.

100% Octopus – just set direct debit to minimum, and pay it off via Amex every month. Also highly recommend their Agile tariff if you can avoid peak hours – very good savings, especially as price cap is going up soon.

If you are interested, here’s a code 😀

I’m with EDF and they have been okay.

The direct debit with them seems a bit cat and mouse though in that I’ve had a year where I finally managed to get it down to £2 a month but they’ve now whacked it up to £300-something despite the account being well in credit.

I have had zero success getting EDF to reduce the direct debit by speaking to them and the lowest it will currently allow me to lower it to is ~£190 a month.

So if spending as much as possible on an Amex is your objective then maybe stick to Octopus.

For what it’s worth I have just fixed with EDF until September 2025. This will likely save me about 5-10% over the variable tariff. Saisnbos would have been a bit cheaper but inertia is a strong force. And I’m not agile enough to keep an eye on octopus’ agile tariff.

I just want an easy life.

E.On have some decent tariffs but don’t accept Amex, top up using Avios Barclaycard is OK though.

    Thanks so much @byt411, @froggee and @strickers.

That is really helpful to know.

I’m probably going to go ahead with Octopus, but really appreciated your feedback on this.

If I can help you in any way, please give me a shout. I’ve visited over 85 countries, so if you need any country/travel advice, do let me know. 🙂

+1 for Octopus, got a £5 DD and pay the balance with Amex at the end of each month. Or sometimes prepay if I need to hit a spend target.

Yeah basically if you can avoid using most energy between 16:00 – 19:00, then there’s massive savings to be had on the Agile tariff. Rates are also negative from time to time (like most of last week) – meaning you get paid to use electricity!

In terms of advice, not sure really? I guess, which was the country you most enjoyed visiting and why, and which was the least?

    Hi

I can confirm EDF accept Amex payments online and in the app.

If anyone wants a £50 credit feel free to use the link below:

Do you have solar panels? Octopus is worth it for gas (tracker tariff) and agile if you can shift load outside of 1600-1900. Otherwise, the tracker tariff can be a decent option.

For solar/EV tariffs it is worth considering Eon also, but be very patient with their very lousy customer service.

The tracker has been sublime last few months I switched to it. Some people get the DD to £1 with Octopus, mine is at £5 and just overpay monthly. Been extremely happy with them.
