Forums › Payment cards › American Express › Amex International Currency Card – is fee refunded on cancellation?
-
I am into my 2nd year of the Amex ICC and just got hit with the $100 AF. I transferred quite a bunch of points last year but am down to 150k MR now, and also I don’t spent much time in the UK these days and henceforth don’t really use the Amex card much at all. Would it make sense to call and cancel the card instead? Will the AF be refunded for the ICC (as with the other Amex UK cards)?
Isn’t the ICC either a USD or EUR one? Shouldn’t you be using it more as you spend more time outside uk, unless you live in neither US nor Europe?
@BuildBackBetter Maybe if they’re resident elsewhere, they’re probably able to access to the banking and credit system (and super credit cards 😀 ) in that country and they have no need of the ICC USD card

Yes, neither. I get the equivalent of 4 miles per Singapore dollar so around 6.6 miles per GBP. No reason to use the ICC card.
Anyone knows if the AF will be refunded if I cancel the card?

Mine was last time I cancelled, this was during peak COVID, late 2020, when Australians were imprisoned, so the card had zero value to me at the time.
However, bear in mind it’s not available directly from Amex any more, so if it’s gone, it’s going to be more difficult to reacquire. I’m currently coming up to the end of year one of one I since reopened it, and am contemplating whether to keep it. The insurance coverage is very good for the price, in my view.
Edit to add, no idea how they refund you the balance if you’re in credit. I’d spend some money on it first so that the AF refund pays towards that, rather than risk getting a USD/EUR cheque and having to work out what to do with it.
I cancelled my ICC USD Platinum recently and the balance credit was very easily wired directly into my U.S. bank account, in USD, from the UK (my bank account has no incoming international wire fees).
I’m in two minds about mine. Since Jumeirah devalued, the only partner I am realistically going to use given the ICC MR rates is Singapore Airlines. Whilst the transfer rate is astonishingly good vs UK MR, paying $100 per year to keep this option available may not be sensible.
