Forums Payment cards American Express Amex Platinum – 2 insurance questions

  • 223 posts

    Hi all,

    I searched the Forums to the best of my ability, but did not quite find a reply. I am sure there is one, but no returns from Google.

    Q 1 – Does the Plat card’s travel insurance benefit and insurance benefits as a whole mean that I should be OK to refuse any other insurance offered by third parties upon a booking?

    Q 2 – If so, does the insurance cover a trip that I booked in September? If I have it right, all except purchase protection are valid even if the card is not used. However, I wonder if a “backdated” trip that I booked before I got a Plat card is eligible?

    Thanks

    These are really different questions to answer as the cover you need is personal to you. There are some weaknesses and lacunae in the Amex policy that have been highlighted before, so it’s possible that additional insurances you are offered plug a gap. For instance, travel inconvenience is very limited vs other policies, single item limit of £500 doesn’t cover lots of modern phones, camera equipment, absence of public liability cover is peculiar and rather unsatisfactory etc. etc. You also need to be careful which sections require use of the card for the insurance cover to apply.

    Yes it backdates if you use an amex (non-plat)

    Thanks both for the responses.

    @Carlos
    – it was paid off by a BA Amex as that was the only thing I had in September and to hit a SUB with Jet2, worked out great.

    I guess if I just print out the insurance cert to have at hand I’ll be just grand. Major issues seem to be related to age and medical conditions which do not apply to us luckily so upon reading the details and summary, the gadget cover of £500 is indeed a bit lower than I’d like but I can live with that.

    I was just wondering how people approach this – if you just use Plat or get additional ones. Perhaps only when you have exceptional circumstances or unique criteria that’s not supplied by AMEX?
