I know a lot of the sign up bonuses say that they are for new members only, historically have people ever had luck upgrading from a free card such as the rewards or cash back card to the platinum?

Yes, often an offer to upgrade from Gold to Platinum, and I think I recall some folk reporting success in getting the bonus when choosing the Rewards card to upgrade from.
Also, if you only hold the cash-back card (and haven’t held a MR-earning card in the prior 24 months) you’d qualify for a sign-up bonus on Platinum anyway.
You are also eligible for a bonus on BAPP card.
