I know this is maybe a bit of a silly question so pardon my naivety – but is there a way to uplevel your membership tier on the Flying Club without needing to take enough flights or is number of flights and all the more in upper classes the only way to uplevel?
Thanks.
@smartboyalec Virgin sometimes offer status matches (see https://www.headforpoints.com/2024/01/09/statusmatcher-review-3/).
The Founders Card also has a one-off Silver membership upgrade after one paid revenue round trip VS flight. although the lowest fee I’ve ever seen is $590 for 2 years ($295 pa). Whether this represents value for money depends on the use of your Silver status, plus of course the other benefits from the card…
Gold members can also gift Silver status (https://flywith.virginatlantic.com/gb/en/flying-club/members/membership-tiers.html).
Otherwise, as you say, it’s via the flying route. In which case, a consolation is that with VS you earn tier points on reward flights too. You can earn silver status with two UC return redemptions in your membership year.
I did a status match and one redemption flight later got Silver.
The US Founders Card enables you to buy status without flying at all I think, although it seems impossible to check the small print without actually buying the card, so check carefully. Perhaps someone with a membership can explain how it works.

Hi @memesweeper – I got a status match to Silver from KrisFlyer without actually flying a flight – back in the day the terms of Virgin’s match were that you had to have evidence of a revenue flight booked so I got the cheapest ticket available to Tel Aviv one way and then cancelled – got some TFCs refunded less a £30 charge. Net cost was about £100 and the status stuck! YMMV
As for the Founders Card, the terms are as I stated above, e.g. you DO appear to need to take a flight :
Terms read:
“The Fine Print
New and existing Flying Club members receive Silver membership after their first round-trip flight with fast track to Gold membership after earning 500 tier points.
To be eligible, flight must be a paid revenue round trip flight (not reward/points flight), and must be flown within 12 months of the FoundersCard promotion being added to your Flying Club account, which typically takes 4 weeks after requesting to enroll via this benefit page. Flights cannot be applied retroactively.
Promotion may only be applied once. Flying Club members who already have Silver or Gold are not eligible for this offer”
Thanks for replying, so unless I can find a benevolent gold member who will nominate me – flying is the only way. Reason I was asking is coz I am saving for the companion voucher and I believe the class you get depends on your flying club tier🤦♂️
