Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

    Morning peeps,

Just noticed that BA allowing avios boost for the whole of 2024 unless already boosted, available as 4 x the avios earned (think it cast more than the normal 0.92 though need to check again with glasses on in the morning)

It should be the normal 0.92p per Avios unless you’ve gone over the limit.

I can boost my Barclaycard sign-up bonus, along with the Avios I collected that month. That would give me 113,068 Avios for £1,040.23.

As mentioned in the comments under today’s article, now might not be the best time for speculative buying. After the reaction to the recent BAEC/C changes, I fear for readers’ emotional wellbeing if there’s an announcement about dynamic pricing in the coming weeks!

this should always be at the forefront of your mind. These schemes can and do significantly devalue with no notice.

You are rught the 4 x boost is significantly more expensive at 13.98p per point

Actually it’s not that simple. The price in the higher multipliers changes depending on which transactions you select to boost. No idea what the formula is they are using though

Mine is 0.91p per Avios (£1079.34 for 117,320 Avios) with the 4x boost.

I wish we could boost Alaska Airlines miles instead! They now let you earn status from redemption flights.

Have you considered if you are crossing the 300k threshold?

The multipliers were different for me and for my wife – for my wife it was more expensive per point to boost by 400% than to boost by 100% but for me the 400% boost was the best value

No, will be the same BUT you would have gone over the 300,000 Avios cap, beyond which 0.92p does not apply.

Lol I can buy a million avios for £15000.

    Or 250k for £2400.

Well I need to see if there are any redemptions I can make that I won’t be cancelling as dynamic pricing is probably coming on 4th Feb (same day as the death of UK ebay)

Right I see to get the best deal I have to deselect some transactions to keep the 4x amount under 300k avios.

Is it worth boosting/buying to pay towards a BA holiday?

I currently have 66k avios and can boost 189k (300%) to get to 256k for £1740.

I am looking at a holiday through ba for £4.4k – is it worth me getting the boosted points to pay down some of the holiday?
is there a way to work it out?

    thanks

Do a dummy booking, see how much as near to 256k avios saves.

The way to work it out Sid o a dummy booking then when “part pay with avios” option go through all the options and divide the cash saving by the number of avios needed.

But in my experience the value drops rapidly to approx .5 per avios.

I can’t imagine you’re ever going to get near 0.9p per avios using them to part pay a cash booking, let alone make a saving. It’s might be better value to book one of the flights as an award booking with avios you’ve bought (depending on the cash price of the flight, of course).

unfortunately you have to log on with your account, so it takes the balance that you already have ….

    John 1,341 posts

I think you only get £10 off for 1000 avios – so I suppose you could make 80p per ticket if you can buy 1000 for £9.20

Re speculative buying, mentioned above and discussed at length in the article comments. Certainly something to keep in mind (especially if there turns out to be a switch to dynamic pricing as opposed to just a flat increase in redemption rates).

But also worth remembering that the £ in your pocket devalues by the rate of inflation (which hasn’t exactly been low in the last few years).

I tend to regard Avios as I would any other foreign currency – if I have a potential need in the next year or so and the exchange rate happens to be good, I’ll buy some. Just don’t keep too many eggs in one basket 😉

Buying Avios is not without risk, true, but equally every time we book future travel overseas we take the risk that our spending there may cost more than we anticipated if the exchange rate goes against us. Or it could cost less. But so too could BA – probably more hypothetically than likely, granted – keep redemption rates the same but increase the cost of buying, which would presumably lead to reduced earnings on credit cards etc if Amex et al had to pay more for their Avios; in which case buying now might be a good idea. Eg those who took out Avios subscriptions a couple of years ago and renewed have so far been shielded from the subsequent price rise. Swings and roundabouts etc 😉

*any other* foreign currency? I wouldn’t buy Turkish lira unless I was going in the next few days.

    BA IT strikes again!

I was hesitating, but bit the bullet and went to boost x4 all 2024 transactions to get about 114,000 avios at 0.91p each. Got to the payment page, clicked pay, and then all of a sudden the screen flashed back to the page where you click transactions to boost, and they had all disappeared. The avios haven’t come through, I didn’t get a confirmation email, I can’t now see any transactions that are boostable, but the purchase is pending on my Amex.

Contacted BA and they told me to contact Points.com – who told me they just supply the infrastructure and it’s BA’s backend problem. Contacted BA and they are adamant that they don’t have anything to do with boosting. Looks like i won’t get any boosted points this time around and will need to file an Amex dispute.

    @warrier01

Patience is a virtue her wonders to behold.

Just wait a couple of hours to see if this resolves before running off to AMEX.

A simple log off and on again will likely sort the balance out.

In any case AMEX can do little with a pending transaction. They’ll step in if it becomes a proper charge and you’ve still not got the avios but until then leave them be.

Bought 200k Avios yesterday at the quadruple boost price (0.92p for me).
Immediately spent on a Qatar redemption to Perth for the first Ashes test match in November.
Have booked as to 2 separate flights MAN-DOHA on 1 PNR and DOHA-PERTH return on the other which are the new VA flights operated by Qatar.
Spoke to Qatar in advance who said that I can request luggage to be checked in all the way to Perth when I arrive at Manchester airport.
Overall paid 226k avios + taxes so 46k more than a usual redemption to Australia but still happy I get to fly in J and watch the cricket!
