Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Avios domestic flights, and advantage in booking a return?

  • 423 posts

I need a connecting flight EDI-LHR in October, to connect with Virgin flight which is a pain.

But I can fix the return LHR-EDI now but need to wait for a few months before booking outbound connection.

Is there any advantage in waiting and booking an Avios return – or is 2 x single bookings exactly the same cost?

I won’t get bags checked through anyway so should make no difference?

The 2 main downsides to booking each leg separately are that you’ll pay 2 lots of cancellation fees if decide to cancel your trip, and if BA cancels one leg, the other isn’t protected.

If you can live with those, you won’t lose much by booking them separately, and it can even work to your advantage if you decide to tweak the trip at either end.

    Thanks 🙂

And no way to get bags checked through from BA T5 to Virgin in T3? Of course not!

Because you’re bookign them as separate trips! This is not new and you know this because you mentioned in your original post!

If you booked it as one then bags would be interlined. But you’re not so they won’t be.

This has just reminded me – doesn’t Virgin also sell BA domestic connections? Therefore OP might be able to get them tagged onto the long haul flights with bags interlined? Would have to be cash, of course, as this wouldn’t be possible with avios. (Or also if the VS flight was booked with points)?

Yes VS does sell BA domestic connections onto and off VS longhauls but as you say only for cash flights and booked at the same time as the VS flight,.

Well yes I didn’t think bags could be tagged through, but wasn’t aware of the cash flight connection from BA – VS flight is on points as you suspected so not an option.

It’s just going to be a pain with golf clubs as well and having to collect and lug by train rather than flight connections 🙁
