Is there any reason to add passport details to your profile?

The two cited reasons are (a) to track expiration, and (b) to manage passport details where you are often the lead booker (i.e. for a family). Personally, I shy away from providing passport details to organisations that do not have an explicit need to know (and my preferred airlines do a good job at saving it in my profile, anyway).
