Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club BA Amex Companion Voucher – Open Jaw- Mileage chart?

  • 19 posts

    Hello
I have read the article about the rules about open jaw (distance between two cities to be no more than either flight leg). Is there a mileage chart anywhere. My geography isnt good. Can a US East Coast and West Coast be done as an open jaw, or is the US wider than I am imagining? Ideally would like to fly UK-West Coast -(internal flights)- NYC-UK.
Would that qualify for open jaw?
Alternatively could I book UK-West Coast wiht a stopover (4 nights) in NYC either outbound or inbound?

You can either use Great Circle Mapper or just google. The IATA rule for single or double open jaws is that the ‘surface’ distance (in your case from your US east coast city to the west coast one) cannot be greater than either of your flights.

punch the airport codes into gcmap.com to get the distances.

Thanks Scott. That tells me LHR-LAX 5456 miles, LAX-JFK 2475 miles, JFK-LHR 3451 miles. So the ‘internal’ leg is shortest – so allowed.

Next question, how do I best use a companion voucher for this trip? Just book the UK-US legs as an open jaw and then sort the internal flight sepratly, or can I include the whole trip on a companion voucher?

You’ll need to sort the internal separately. You can’t mix and match companion voucher redemption bookings with anything else, and you won’t get JFK-LAX on BA metal which you need for a companion voucher….
