Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

    Hey guys,

I have made several hotel booking directly with Marriott and Hilton (I am a member of both) through the BA shopping portal. Some of them have tracked but I never got the follow up email saying my Avios are on the way.

Is there anyway I could contact anyone on the BA team to rectify this?

It’s a shame as I will be missing out on several thousands of Avios with these hotel bookings!

Thanks for the help in advance 🙂

I have more or less given up purchasing through the estore – 80-90% of estore purchases hardly register and the missing avios is becoming a chore. shame as I earned quite a bit when the purchases were tracking almost instantly.

Receiving the email notifications is unreliable, but does not matter – just click on your account and see if it tracked. The estore will typically only investigate claims after the stay has taken place if it has not tracked, which takes some good record keeping if far in the future…

Both Hilton and Marriott are pretty unreliable at actually paying out, though recently tend to come through in batches several months after stays have taken place. The amounts paid rarely seem to relate to the advertised earning rate as there is lots of weird T&Cs about loyalty status and country which means the rate is different than the headline on the site.

Still worth doing if you are booking anyway, of course.

A certain number of people report this but I and many others report that it works just fine and allows one to accumulate a significant number of Avios buying things one is buying anyway.

There’s no doubt you need to be quite precise in following the rules when making the purchase and that ad blockers or similar, VPNs etc may inhibit the tracking cookie from being attached to your order. If you navigate away or use any sort of offer/discount your order might be rejected per the conditions.

As soon as you select the retailer it should show in your history which you can check on another device before proceeding, so you have evidence for any subsequent missing Avios claim.

On the e-store, does anyone know if the fact that my phone automatically opened the John Lewis app rather than going to the website would affect an order tracking?

Before I start I check the retailer website has the item I want to buy. I make a note of the item stock code (sku) in Excel. Then I clear browsing history and clear cookies. Then I always log in to the BA estore website using private browsing /incognito mode. I then accept all cookies and then click in the retailer that I want to buy from taking a screen shot of the current Avios I will earn. I then search for the item Sku that I noted beforehand. Then complete purchase and only when checking out then enter my account ID for that website.

Using the above methodology has resulted in 99% success rate over the last 3 years. I had one adjustment where they took back my avios and gave me a different amount in November 2023 but that’s the only one where it went wrong.

Works fine for me. Sainsbury’s was an annoying one until I noticed in the text that it only works on a desktop – mobile and tablet doesn’t track.

Am glad you raise JL. For a few months now, clicking via the BA estore would just take me to the JL mobile site from where I’d purchase and the Avios would track seamlessly. I don’t know if it’s a recent iOS or JL app update, but unfortunately the estore opens up JL.com which then opens up the mobile app (all automatically) and no joy in tracking Avios on spend.

I’m now having to purchase via my desktop to get the Avios credited.

If anyone knows how to stop this “auto app open” feature then do let me know! Thanks

I uninstalled the IHG mobile app on my phone as the e-store kept opening that and nothing ever seemed to track.
Since then, going through desktop sites on my PC or phone, things seem to work although they can take anything from a day to months to payout – anything that does come through is a bonus though.

That’s annoying. Might just bin the John Lewis app as I don’t actually use it for anything really.

Hi all, does anyone know if the email address used for the BA avios account have to be the same as the one used on the estore you have navigated to for the avios to be awarded? Thank you.

They use cookies to track 99% of the time but there may be the odd one that uses email addresses. It’ll say in the Ts&Cs for the retailer before you click in the estore if the email needs to match
