Hoping to use my BA Exec Club Avios points to upgrade my seats London > Perth on Avios partner airline Qatar Airways. As my BA Avios points are linked I can see the full amount available to me on my Qatar Airways dashboard. However, whenever I try to upgrade my economy seats booking to Business using the online upgrade option tool it offers only a cash spend upgrade to Business.
Am I right in thinking that generally speaking seat upgrades using Avios can only be made either a) one or two weeks prior to departure date or b) only once you check-in online (i.e. 48 hours prior to departure)? I get no clear answer from Qatar Airways support team on this – phone or chat.
Do award seats have to be available to be able to do this? I would have thought this would be a very popular route for award seats.
Also, do you perhaps need to upgrade each sector separately?
Not sure re award seats and will check. I guess my concern would be a normally popular flight and destination/location already having full paid-for business class reservations.
I am wanting to upgrade the DOH > PER (return) leg only (74k Avios per passenger). When I spoke to BA (who I could have booked though) they mentioned, if with them, I would only be able to upgrade to whole trip and not separate legs.
