Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club BA cancelled my flight – please help

  • 20 posts

BA have just emailed me that they have cancelled my flight on the 27th Nov Lon-HND using my BA 241.
We have used 2x BA 241 – mine and my wife and we’re taking our parents and our under 1 year old baby and going on CW.
They have offered us to change for the 26th or 28th however, we have booked flights from Gib-LHR and booked a hotel at LHR also for that day along with hotels in Tokyo.
How can I go about changing all this?
They do have JAL flights available but would BA allow me to change onto those?
Do I have any rights due to using the 241?

You’ve got several weeks before you fly, so no need to panic just yet. Do you mean the alternative flight is offered in MMB in your BA account? Don’t accept anything until you have spoken to BA.

You need to call BA (maybe leave it a couple of days as apparently it takes some time for them to receive their re-booking policies), and ask if they will re-route you on the same day. Have some options to put to them, as you’ve already started looking. Not sure about JAL but QR could be an option.

If they refuse to re-route you the same day come back here for further discussion!

Also, your rights are NOT affected in any way by how you paid for the tickets.

Thank you SO much for replying so quickly!
Yes they allow me to check alternative dates on MMB – 26th and 28th are available.
But my worry is, we have 2 different bookings (booking 1 has me and my dad and booking 2 has my wife, mum and child). If I change using one MMB, I’m worried that there wont be enough seats left for the other booking (as LHR-HND can be very popular on avios especially CW).
Also, leaving it for later, I’m scared that even 26th and 28th will get booked by others?

When they cancel a flight you don’t need Avios availability to rebook, any available seat will do (on flights that are offered). There are currently 9+ Business seats on BA on the 26th & 28th, and also on the JAL flight on the 27th. You should be able to rebook on to the latter, but may need to call.

Do yourself a favour and try to get on JAL flight. It’s on the same date and that’s a reasonable request.

@Amit1989 – it sounds as though you will need to call BA to get both your bookings aligned. You will need to have authority on your wife’s account or for her to be present. Check what flights have availability and suit you better than the options given in MMB. You don’t need to wait for any official policy as the current guidelines already allow rebooking into JAL or Finnair flights.

Call quickly given the number of seats you need. JAL may have seats but as it will be a codeshare flight BA may not actually have access to book all that are available, not even for a new cash booking. As codeshare flights are divvied up amongst codesharing airlines to book.

Be prepared to HUACA and come back if they suggest anything outlandish to you instead.

JAL is by far the best alternative so get cracking.

Update – my FIL (without me knowing) accepted the BA rebooking to a day later (28th) which we did not want – extra day in London with an infant…

Called the call centre, they said she can cancel the 28th booking but it can only be rebooked with BA – no partner/oneworld airlines.

Was on chat at the same time, chat CS agent was able to rebook us on JAL!!!

Extremely happy with this outcome! Never flown with them before but many have pointed out the wonders!

Just trying to sort out seating but not able to access their MMB – anyone know where to find my res number for JAL by any chance?

Thank you everyone! Caca Saturday turned into a good one 😀

For seat selection on AA and IB for example, when on MMB, I follow the options for seat selection, and BA’s IT will indicate that it needs to transfer data to another partner.

When I scroll down on the same page, it gives the partner airline booking reference number.

It just says: Visit the website of the airline you’re flying with to select your seats. You may be able to do this before check in.

    No other references given unfortunately.y

BA and JAL operate as a joint venture so no issue being rebooked but as you found their MMB isn’t sophisticated enough to offer it up as an option and some agents are misinformed. Good job you checked!

Try calling JAL and have them look you up by name and get it that way perhaps

Managed to figure it out. The BA reservation number works but you have to change the MMB login to BA flight number instead of using the JL number.

Weirdly seatmap on JAL MMB is showing a 121 configuration however, seatguru and even BA customer service said it should be a 232 configutation. Not sure what’s changed, JAL website for booking the flight shows 232 also.

    Don’t use seat guru

Most accurate maps are on http://www.aerolopa.com and on the own airlines site / MMB

Oh wow, its changed to their new A350!
Their website (when buying a new ticket) shows 777-300
Their MMB is showing the A350
Guess its the A350 which I’m much happier about!

    Thank you! 😀

Now its BA4600 (JAL44) that has been cancelled. Although, I am able to buy this ticket on BA.com still.

    SMH indeed.

Well, repeat steps above and let us know how you get on.

They said they have cancelled the ‘code share’ for that flight. Did not know that was a thing!

And they have rebooked me onto the same flight but now under JL44. Happiness 😀

Code shares are not always automatic. They are usually manually added.

If a change is made to the prime flight the code share number can become detached and so can appear as a “cancelled” flight with the airline operating the code share even if the prime isn’t.
