I actually got through to someone on the phone! Sadly, they then told me that they were unable to find my booking (original flight date was from last year) via name, booking ref or ticket number.
Meanwhile, I had a chat session in the queue on ba site which was replied to mid-call and they were able to find my booking. Everything was going fine until they say ‘Seats are not available in the same class, as seats are not available in the same class. I won’t be able to rebook on to another class.’
It seems that they refused to rebook to the new flight because of the ticketing class rather than the class of travel, as econ tickets are currently bookable on BA site.
You are entitled to be rerouted in same *cabin class* as booked. So Economy, Premium Economy, Business,First. Booking Class is a subset of cabin class. Typically 1 cabin can have many booking classes. Booking classes will identify award seats vs paid (usually) as well as be linked to other things like fare rules.
However an airline is not allowed to refuse you a seat based on booking class. If there’s a seat being sold in the same cabin as you booked, and you are being rebooked/rerouted because of a flight on your ticket having been cancelled then you have a right to any available seat in same cabin regardless of booking class. Airline is not allowed to insist that a seat of the same booking class is available. So they cant say there needs to be an avios seat to rebook you into: any available seat, they are supposed to give you.
Is there a question in here?
No, it was more about how lol BA are.

Yeah, its just so typically BA tho. Its like they spin the excuse generator to see why they cant do a rebooking. They couldnt pull the ‘only rebook within 12 months of booking date’ cos thats long since passed, so I guess this was the next excuse 🙂
I shall be trying the US number later! 🙂
