Hi
How strict are BA on their hand bag size. We are flying Club Europe on an award ticket and have a Cabin bag that is smaller than the maximum dimensions allowed however for the extra “Hand Bag” that goes under the seat one bag is slightly over the stated sizes. Is it soft sided and wont be crammed full and I know it fits easily under a seat as have used it before as it fits Ryan Airs handbag policy.
I know some many say its up to the cabin staff on the day but just checking if there is a “chance” it will be OK
I’ve never once had my baggage size-checked by BA. If it looks like it will fit under the seat, it won’t get a second glance.
They’re not strict at all (more’s the pity sone would say) but at an outstation, you can never predict what a gate agent might do. Pack both bags with one eye on having to surrender the larger one for gate checking – i.e. know what valuables are in it that need to be transferred, know what essentials are in it that you couldn’t be without if it failed to turn up on arrival, carry a lock for it if one is not integrated.
I’ve often been on flights where pax have been asked to check in hand luggage (and volunteered ours if we have hold baggage to collect anyway), but I’ve never seen them check any dimensions. As @Andrew says, the main thing seems to be that the 2nd bag will fit under your seat, and being in CE it’s very unlikely you’d be asked to check in your cabin bag.
Was thinking about this as I boarded at EDI this morning.
Whilst there were Jet2, Easyjet, Ryanair and other luggage sizers knocking around by the boarding gates, I can’t remember ever seeing a BA sizer.
There must be one somewhere though. Any known sightings?
I think there are 2 elements worthy of noting in answer to your question.
1) BA do not do bag sizing checks (unfortunately), there are many threads around the web lamenting this fact.
2) Even if they did, if it is a soft sided bag that can fit into the sizer, then it is compliant. You could technically use a black bin bag and as long as it was not overfilled to not fit into the sizer, it would be compliant.

There’s sizers at gates 142 and 143 at MAN T3. Both are behind the doors controlled by the gate agents that only open at boarding so there’s no opportunity for passengers to self-size.
