Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club BA / Qatar household accounts

Does anyone know if there is a way of accessing the Avios in a BA household account when making redemptions for Qatar Airways?

I was looking at the Qatar Family Programme, in the hope that it might replicate the household account, but it looks like that is designed so the main account holder earns Avios from family members, rather than granting access to a pool of Avios.

    Thanks

I’m not entirely sure what you’re asking here, but I have linked my BAEC account (am head of the household) to my QR account.

When I log in via QR, I get my own BAEC balance as the “available” quota, not the household balance.

When I made a QR redemption on QR using my BA Avios, I see that the points came entirely from my own balance. It wasn’t spread proportionally around the family account in the way a BAEC redemption would be. So I suspect the answer to your Q is no.

If one person in the HHA has an abnormally high balance, could they make the redemption for you?

    Ok thanks, that’s helpful.

We are looking at booking a couple of flights across BA and QR that are going to use up most of the household balance, and I don’t want to get stuck with the amount we need for the QR part being spread across the household if they can’t all be used for a QR redemption.

Presumably the way round this is to book via BA.com, but I seem to remember seeing that either the Avios or the charges were higher than when going direct to QR.

    Correct on point 1.

For point 2, not always. I believe perhaps from some regional airports (e.g.MAN) they charge additional miles to some places like Australia. Recall seeing an article about it. But worth a look.

I had the same issue with household and there is no way around it on QR so ultimately booking via BA may be your only choice, even if it’s a few more miles.

Yes, I saved big on the charges booking via QR but as I recall the main benefit here was on flights leaving the UK, so you might be able to book via QR for the outbound and then via BA to mop up the household points for the return leg?

    I’m a bit confused.
I thought the Avios and charges were identical when booking a Qatar Airways flight, regardless of whether through BAEC or QRPC.

Agreed. Should be. Unless the IT is glitchy, which is highly unlikely 🙂

I think that only applies on a point to point basis. I had the added bonus of booking when QR had an “up to” 50% discount on the cash component but a quick check below shows the cash component as fixed while the avios differs

    BHX-AUH, 26/10
    QR site £354 & 45k avios
    BA site £354 & 64k Avios

    AUH-BHX 24/10
    QR site £179 & 45k Avios
    BA site £169 & 64k Avios

    LCA-AUH
    QR site EUR193 & 40k Avios
    BA site £156 & 56k Avios

BHX-DEL (so not dictated by the connection being in F)
    QR site £353 & 55k
    BA site £353 & 69k

Yes, the article confirms that. No difference from London though. Not sure about starting from abroad. Seems pretty conclusive tbf

To “fix” your issue, where prices are equal on BA and QR, move as much of the highest balance to Avios.com or QR, and redeem on BA. This should “clean out” the household balances. Then move your Avios to QR and redeem on QR for those flights that are cheaper on QR.
