Hello, could somebody with access to ExpertFlyer post if there is a specific reason for this flight cancellation? Thank you!
I don’t have access to ExpertFlyer but I think it may be related to the late departing EDI to LHR flight BA1445 which is only going to arrive at LHR at 16:10. That plane was supposed to operate the LHR-MAD flight afterwards. I got that info off FlightAware
BA some while ago ceased to put cancellation/delay reason codes into Amadeus so you won’t find them in any publicly available system, even with a subscription. They did this because suddenly everyone became an expert on the subject making 2+2 add up to 93 and making arsey claims!
All you can realistically do is to make enquiries of staff (albeit nothing they say is really of probative value) and if you aren’t satisfied that the cancellation was as a result of ‘extraordinary circumstances’ get BA to prove it. They won’t do that directly to you, but will to CEDR or MCOL.
There have been a number of cancellations today owing to weather and there are many ‘extraordinary circumstances’ issues (notably with ATC) around Europe at the moment so don’t count on banking any compensation just yet.

Indeed. The plane itself a show a 1hr delay on the EDI-LHR previous flight. Hardly a reason to cancel the next LHR-MAD sector to be flow unless you knew it wasn’t very busy and can put most passengers in other flights.

@yonasi I don’t know what happened to that flight and nor do you, yet you are writing some narrative that may have a tiny grain of truth, only in that BA has been required to make a number of cancellations today. In doing so, it will almost invariably prioritise long haul over short haul and routes that have a number of services over those with only one or two flights making re-accommodation of passengers more difficult. They do this because it generally offers a better outcome for both passengers and the airline. The arrival of the flight from Edinburgh is a complete red herring; there are last minute aircraft changes all the time. This consolidation of flights story that the odd person on here likes to bring up from time to time is actually quite rare and generally done for valid reasons rather than economic ones as you suggest. If you talk to BA ops people rather thinking conspiracies what happens behind the scenes is rather different.
And to add to @jdb excellent post any consolidation of flights that does take usually happens weeks if not months in advance when it’s easier to move people (and offer refunds and date changes) than it is on the day.
There is also the return flight to consider as well as cargo contracts as well as more esoteric issues like slot usage and ensuring they don’t fall foul of the 80-20 use-lose rule not only at LHR but also at many destination airports.
Believe it or not airlines are loath to cancel flights as it causes all sorts of knock on issues that can sometimes take days to unwind.
@yonasl update on this per the excellent reasons for cancellation thread over on FT your flight was cancelled with code FCRY meaning flight crew and y for yes eligible for compensation.
