Hello all.
I just bit the bullet and purchased the max 80,000 + 80,000 Hilton Points with my BAPP card to hit the 70,000 Avios bonus. The total cost of $800 is now showing on my Amex account as £688,83, which equates to a not great $1.161 per £.
The transaction isn’t broken down any further than that, but I suppose that’s not bad if it already includes the FX fee. So can someone please tell me will that £688.83 sum already include the fee, or has that still to be added separately?
I rarely use my Amex cards for foreign spend so no idea.
Thanks in advance
The fee is usually added after the conversion. For my Gold card, there’s a section of “Non-sterling transaction fee” that’ll tell you the fee you paid. You’ll have to wait until the transaction is processed to see the actual price and the other details.
I paid the IHG Ambassador $200 membership fee using my BAPP for the same reason on the 20th February. When the transaction appeared some days later, I was charged a total of £170.77. The FX rate applied was 1.2061 and included a non-sterling transaction fee of £4.96.
Unless you really need the spend for a SUB, wouldn’t it have made more sense to use Curve for no FX fees?!
I just bought $800 of Hilton Points with my Chase Debit Card. £670.04 less £6.71 CB, so £664.23.
Slightly worse rate than I expected.
I would have probably paid £2 more with Curve/Barclaycard, but gained 670 Avios.
(I recognise that you things differently when going for a sign up bonus).
Thanks guys for all the replies.
I was still struggling to see any breakdown info on the payment online, and just now decided to check in the app instead.
Low and behold the breakdown and non sterling fee is listed in the app, but still not in my online account.
The fee was included in the £688, I got a rate of $1.196 and they charged a £20 fee.
Can live with that given I’ve now triggered the 70,000 bonus, plus I’ll get 1032 Avios for the spend, and can now downgrade the card if I want for a refund on the card fee.
Thanks again

Next time you can try at the front desk of Intercontinental. They charged me 155 GBP instead of 200 USD, and I don’t have any reservations with them as well. Just go to the front desk, buy the Ambassador, and leave.
Worth bearing in mind, thanks. I had to do it in February thinking I was being clever and securing Diamond tier until 31/12/2024. Although I’m currently still Diamond, I think IHG will have the last laugh and am bracing myself for a disastrous relegation to Platinum by the end of this month.
Champions League to the Championship in a matter of weeks! 😔
Yes, I’m toying with the idea of blowing all my points on ICs and Kimptons for the next few weekends and going out in a blaze of glory and eggs Benedict.

Good luck Harrier25, crossing my fingers for you.

@Harrier25 I think it’s more Europa League – surely Club Member level would be closer to Championship!). As a Platinum you should still be getting your club biscuit 😉
