Forums › Payment cards › American Express › BAPP to Amex Platinum ‘swap’ if declined direct?
-
Hi all,
Applied for the Platinum card earlier & was declined (not surprised, my income is quite close to my overall credit limit). I had initially hoped to keep the BA card until the end of June to give myself time to use an offer on it, but I would do better with the benefits from the Platinum card at the moment.
Is it worth calling them up tomorrow at some point and ask if I could ‘switch’? I am aware that they are different products but the issue stated on the rejection was insufficient income. Logically (at least to me) it wouldn’t be a problem if I have the Platinum in place of the BA card re. income and credit limits as it would be a continuation of the status quo I have with them? I have scoured various forums on the matter but can’t find anything relevant, hence asking here.
Would be nice to get an idea now before I go through the hassle of calling them to eventually be told it’s impossible.
Many thanks!
You usually can’t swap.
And you most certainly can’t swap between Avios Cards and MR cards
I think Amex policy is that you have to wait 90 days between applications (at least for the same card). Have you considered substantially reducing the credit limit on your BA card then reapplying after 3 months?

Also, have you seen the current thread about the new minimum income requirements for Platinum?I’d applied (and been rejected) a few hours before the thread was posted but I have seen it since, yes. Though if there’s no hard search done I don’t really mind. Odd to me that they didn’t update their eligibility checker when changing the income requirements but I suppose things like that are overlooked easily enough.
90 day policy was mentioned to me when I did eventually phone.
Was offered the regular retention deal for the BA card though so all’s well that ends well as far as I’m concerned.
