Forums Payment cards American Express British Airways Premium Plus Amex – worth it as a beginner?

As a beginner with few Avios is it worth getting the BAPP with annual fee over the free card? I would spend enough for the companion voucher, but not sure I will get sufficient points to be able to make most use of it.

See this article near the bottom as Head for Points’ Rob explains why the free voucher is not as good as the premium voucher: https://www.headforpoints.com/2022/06/03/what-is-the-best-avios-credit-card-7/

Also if you spend £10,000 on the premium card in your first 12 months, with £3,000 of that spend in the first 3 months, you’d have earned at least 15,000 Avios + the 70,000 Avios welcome bonus if you apply for the BA Premium Plus card via the link on the British Airways homepage (scroll down) by the 21st February.
If you apply for the same card via the American Express website you will get a welcome bonus which is half as generous (35,000 Avios).

with the 35k offer + 1.5 miles per £ you get 50k avios in a years spend + a 241 so effectively 100k avios for £260 Most of us value Avios at 1p so that £500
You would be stupid not to take that
at 70k signup you would be insane not to take it assuming you meet the spend/signup requirements

For the sign up bonus? Yes

Be prepared to let the voucher lapse. It could take you many years to build up enough to make using it worthwhile: don’t worry about that.

With the 70k offer at present it’s a no-brainer. Whether you decide to trade down to the free card after getting your first 241 is a different question (you get a pro rata fee refund) but take the 70k whilst its on offer.

Yes, definitely go for it. You can easily end up with 100k plus avios in a few months. Read other threads how to earn on bills etc. prepay as many of your monthly bills with Amex, direct or by PayPal ie BT, EE, utilities. You can also order pay-point cards for your utilities, and prepay bills at co ops, garages etc. with your Amex card. try your council tax, it may take Amex or PayPal..online tho. Car tax etc so many take Amex now. Look at all of them.

Log into BAEC to shop online. You can earn lots of extra avios that way. Presume you have joined BA Executive Club?? If not, do it asap…

Instead of bacs payments to family members, go by PayPal, within reason, small amounts, but they add up.

If struggling to get to the 10k quickly, buy gift cards for your usual food and petrol supermarkets in advance.
It’s all manageable, don’t be put off. And it’s fun too.
Hope you meet the criteria for the 70k premium plus card. Take your time doing the application, so you chose the correct card. Someone l know, got the free blue card by accident, gutted!
