Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Barclaycard Avios bizarre method of calculation of direct debit

Apologies if this topic has already been raised but I couldn’t find it.

I’ve had a Barclaycard Avios for about 2 or 3 years. If I get a refund for any item during the month it gets taken off my balance and the monthly statement shows the correct amount due. I’ve opted for the full balance to be taken by direct debit.

However, for some bizarre reason, Barclaycard then deducts any refunds for a second time when calculating the amount to be taken by direct debit. No other card issuer, to my knowledge, does this.

Last month, this caused a big problem. I had a balance during the month of about £1,695. I then got a refund in that same month of £845 meaning any balance, as shown on the statement, was now £850. All well and good so far. On the day of the direct debit, Barclaycard did their usual thing of knocking the refund off again and collected the princely sum of £5 by direct debit. Later that day I started getting text messages from Barclaycard telling me that as I haven’t paid the minimum monthly amount there will be a penalty charge of £12. I had to hastily arrange for the balance to be paid off, which was not easy as Barclaycard consistently refuses to accept my Lloyds debit card, claiming that it is foreign.

Has anybody got any idea why Barclaycard accounting works like this? It’s really annoying and, as I said above, no other card issuer operates like this.

No idea why but I’ve never been able to understand how the DD amount was calculated and perhaps your explanation is it.

I settle it by FPS/BACS, which credits within an hour or two.

BC admin and IT is in the same tier at BA, but one mustn’t complain too much as although there are frustrations, there are also advantages.
