Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Barclays Premier review [after they spotted low salary]

  • Wally1976 224 posts

I had a text from the Barclays Premier team the other day asking for a time they can call me to “Discuss the Premier Service”.

I’m a bit concerned that this might be a review of my Premier account which I don’t actually qualify for (my income is below £75k).

Just wondering if anyone’s had one of these discussions and can specify the nature of it?

    TIA

Pretty sure it’s sales related, I get these occasionally and I do credit my qualifying salary there. If they were downgrading you they’d write to you I think

    Thanks Sam, very useful.

I’m not sure why the subject of this has been changed, I’ve got no reason to think they’ve spotted low salary as I’ve been paying in enough each month (although not directly from a salary).

It sounds like the sales call where the advisor takes you through products that you may be interested in.
It can be useful if you have the income to do such things, but if you do not technically qualify then maybe it could be a bit of a waste of your time?

Personally I did not get much out of my interaction in this scenario with them, though I did get a lot our of a similar interaction with Lloyds. That was mainly down to it being an account that was decades old that made sense to adapt. The Barclays situation was well researched before applying though, so I already knew I was getting maximum value there.

I too do not pay my salary directly into my Barclays account. I do transfer the amount into my Barclays account each month from my salary though and they have been fine with that to date.

    My OH gets those regularly.

When you make contact to schedule they never have any sales guys available for people who work nights and are looking to discuss their needs at 03:00.

I like your thinking Andrew 😁

Correct me if me if I’m wrong, but didn’t they say that they would be a charge of £12 per month until you satisfied the income requirement?

It was £20/month for not meeting the criteria but has been temporarily shelved so they downgrade the account instead. The £12/month is for Avios Rewards and you get £5 back if you also have the Avios+ credit card.

100% a sales call till they say otherwise.

I certainly would never have time for this. Follow the wonderful suggestion above, or personally I’d be unlikely to respond unless they send a reminder. If they do, ask if there is anything particular to discuss as you have a very busy period at work right now. Or be me and add if it’s fundamentally of the nature of a sales call, you are aware of their offerings and will contact them if you need anything.
If they have anything interesting to say they’ll email or possibly send something by post.

(Just generic experience but I doubt any different for Barclays.)

FWIW – they often offer free tickets for The O2 and random other stuff (Rugby I think maybe?) in my experience.

Not useful to me but a consideration.

Yup, a friend had a similar call a year or so ago, and over small talk with the advisor mentioned he liked a particular football team. A month or so later he had a call back to offer him tickets to a very high profile match involving said team, completely free.

I confused the two😅. Is there any indication of a possible return, or will this temporary become permanent?

I think Barclays would like to reintroduce it so as to protect the Premier product but that it’s currently perhaps not a very politic time to do it, so no action may be the position for a while.

lol why would you ever waste even 5 minutes to have this call with them? Either don’t respond or if they call say you’re busy and hang up.

If my bank wants to waste my time they better be paying for it.
