Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Hi. I’m wanting to use my Avios points with an upgrade voucher to travel from London to Johanessburg and return from Mauritius to London. I’ve just done a dummy run and it’s not allowing me to use the upgrade on the return trip. Is there a way round this. Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙏

As long as it satisfies IATA open jaw requirements this can be done but requires a phone call to BA. You can’t do an open jaw with a voucher online

There is also the issue that vouchers should be used from UK only, but I seem to recall as long as the itinerary departs the UK, it can be done on return? That’s how it reads, but I think there has been some disagreement on this.

As always, it does seem to depend on the agent you get when you call!

Thank you so much for this information. I have been on the phone speaking to an agent and they just don’t seem to have the knowledge, so frustrating 😬.

Do these flights have to be booked at the same time as I would run the risk of losing the BC on the outgoing flight 🤔. Sorry for all the questions 😬

Call again, and hope to get a more knowledgeable agent. It’s so common it has its own acronym – HUACA. Hang Up And Call Again.

Did you make it really clear what you want them to do, i.e. “Please can you make an open jaw booking using my Barclays upgrade voucher, as this cannot be done online. I want to depart LHR-JND and return MRU-LHR, using the voucher to upgrade from PE to J”? It’s crazy but often the wording you use makes all the difference!

I’m assuming here you’re travelling solo so wanting to upgrade both legs.

Yes I’m travelling solo .it’s an upgrade voucher not a companion voucher . I think the companion voucher is something different?

You can use the upgrade voucher for one or two people, so I was just checking whether you were trying to upgrade 1 x return or 2 x just one of the legs!

What is an open jaw flight.
