Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Benefits of the £20pm fee after voucher attained?

  • 1,843 posts

Hello, can anyone advise if there is any point in continuing with the Avios Plus card, once the upgrade voucher has been received?
My maths may be wrong, but I think I’d need to be spending about £1667 pm in order to break even against the £20 pm fee.
I value Avios at 0.8p due to the ability to spend at Sainsburys, so £1667 = 2500 Avios = £20 worth of Nectar, which is negated by the monthly Barclaycard fee.

If I were to switch to the free card, that same £1667 of monthly spend would see me up by about £13 of Nectar. This also ignores any rumoured SUB for downgrading.

So, are there any benefits to owning the plus card once you’ve landed the upgrade voucher?

    Thanks.

If using 0.8P value. Then. 5000. At £20, or 3750 at £15 ( premier Acc holder)

As compared to standard card. Then need to consider vale of the lower target for seat upgrade.

I think I may bail out even before receiving the upgrade voucher. It is very limited in functionality.

Rob – still no word from Barclays on the purported benefits of World Elite Plus? I am holding off downgrading until this has been clarified. If there are no additional benefits, then they can just say so and people can then make a fully informed decision on which card is best for them long term.

i wouldn’t hold my breath. There won’t be any further benefits than the ones known today.

Yes, not expecting anything but would be good to know for definite before pulling the downgrade trigger.

Rob was going to be doing an article on the benefits of World Elite Plus but he has been waiting for sometime for Barclays to get back to him.

    Probably an answer in itself!

    What are the known benefits?
There must be some, but none spring to mind

It is possible just offering an enhanced amount of Avios and Upgrade voucher might hit the criteria of WE

@Aston100 – Sorry, I meant “known benefits” as in the general benefits of the card (eg 1.5 Avios per £, Upgrade voucher after 10k etc.), nothing MC WE specific.

    Understood, thanks.

As far as I can tell, the only thing this card has going for it (after achieving the Upgrade Voucher) compared to an Amex card is the likelihood of being accepted everywhere.
I don’t even see any offers or insurance or additional points if spending directly with BA etc etc

If your standard monthly spend is enough to have earned the £10k voucher already, then to be blunt, Barlcays won’t really want you using this card as you will cost them a fortune over the year. Expecting them to give you some kind of further benefit is bonkers.

If you are just talking about some calculation for a future situation later in the year, then I think the question for you is what do you want to do in the next year? Do you want another voucher? If yes, on which card would you be prepared to earn it from? If you want to earn another voucher on the paid card, keep holding it.
