Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club Best Avios + cash combination, HK > LHR, using 241

  • 47 posts

I’m getting ready to book HK > LHR, one way (have already booked LHR > TYO) for next January. Here are the prices for 2 seats in CW using a 241 voucher:

    A) 100,000 Avios + £72 (= £1,072 if valuing Avios @ 1p)
    B) 84,000 Avios + £222 (£1,062)
    C) 75,000 Avios + £292 (£1,042)

Is C) the obvious choice as it’s the lowest total cost? I have about 250,000 Avios left. Or would some people choose A), perhaps to lessen Avios devaluation (theft?) risk, or just to save cash?

For comparison, TYO > LHR rates are A) £1,550, B) £1,540, C) £1,450 so it should be possible to fly TYO > HKG on Avios + cash AND HKG > LHR for less than or about the same as TYO > LHR. Also, availability is much better out of HK and it’s a night flight, unlike Tokyo.

Well, if you’ve bought Avios using say the x3 booster, then you’d have paid around 0.92p per Avios, so option C would still be best (by about £10?) in that scenario.
I may be wrong, but that’s how I’m seeing it.

The other way to look at it is the cost of ‘buying’ the points between the different options.
ie. £150 for 16,000 avios for option A vs B.

I thought in general the avios cash mix needs to be the same out and back when using 241? I think there has been one report of someone managing to do a different mix, but typical reports are it needs to be same.

I think that’s true, but I booked the outbound leg using a Barclaycard Upgrade Voucher (100,000 Avios + £550 for 2 pax in CW, LHR > TYO). So my return from HK to LHR will actually be the first leg of my 241 voucher. Will return to Tokyo again on the ‘inbound’ leg of the 241, using the same Avios + cash elements, in 11-12 months.

Yes, perhaps 50% of my Avios have come from my subscription (not renewed after the first year) and from a couple of boosts, never paying more than 0.92p/Avios in each case. That makes the maths a bit tricky for me..

If you bought at 0.92p and sell at 1p it’s effectively buying a BA Gift Card at 8% off. All the options are roughly the same so IMO it depends on how much avios you have left and what your plans are for using them.

    No it’s not.
A BA gift card would be redeemed against cash fares which would be much higher and inflexible.
Buying Avios at 0.9 , generally you can get 2p of value of reward flight v cash fare
