Hi all,
New to this forum and never used my points before. I have racked up about 155,000 Avios points + a companion voucher and I wanted to know what is the best use (travelling) me and my wife can make of these points to ensure we get the best value.
We really want to use them for a trip to Bali are very flexible on dates and airlines, but I’m just not sure on the best way to do it. Happy to also transfer them to another airline if possible and if it works out better.
I’d be grateful for any advice you guys can provide me.
Best wishes,
H
Haven’t checked availability, but BA will fly to Kuala Lumpur from November, so a points flight to there with your voucher and then a cash flight on is probably your best bet. You’ll need a touch more than 155,000 avios for business if you want the lowest cash cost.
Remember a 2-4-1 can only be used on BA, IB and EI operated flights
Also ‘best use / value’ is very sujective and people can go down a rabbit hole tryign to get a ‘value’ from them down to several decimal places
Use the avios and voucher to get you somwehere you really want to go to
You’ve said you really want to go to Bali so do that :-).
Get yourself a BA flight using the voucher to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. From there, it’s a cheap connection to Bali.
Unless you boost up (you’ll need 220000 off peak), you’re probably looking at Premium rather than Business.
It gets some flak, but this is where sign-up bonuses can be exceptionally useful and credit cards can offer real value. Bali with a companion voucher is the target so you need to get over the line to 220k Avios to fly to KL or Singapore. Can’t be bothered to actually check so I’m taking the 220k figure above as correct. Assuming your natural Avios earnings will take too long to get there, it will cost you less to sign up to Amex Platinum and hit the bonus than it will to buy all those points for cash; so you get a hard cash saving, and then get the rest of the year’s Platinum benefits “for free” and can work them into your trip. (Travel insurance is useful to you. Priority Pass may well be useful on the cash sectors of the trip. Hotel status may be beneficial depending on where you stay in Bali, and you can likely use the home and abroad restaurant credits along the way and stop off at Harvey Nicks on the way home 😀 ; all for less cost than an Avios purchase to get you over the line)
