Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Best use of companion voucher?

  • 12 posts

Wonder if someone can advise if this is the best use of a companion voucher…

We’ve found J availability in Aug/Sept for a AMS-SYD return trip coming in at 346,250 Avios + £ 1,293.64 or 300000 Avios + £ 1,821.64 (avios+cash). We’re Avios poor so would use Qatar’s 50% purchase bonus which would cost £3500 for 300,000 avios, so a total of £5321.64 return. LHR – SYD comes in a bit heavier on the avios.

Does this seem like a decent redemption or am I missing a trick somewhere? Also, can bonus Avios be included in the 250k transfer limit from Qatar to BA?

BA don’t fly AMS-SYD unless your flying AMS-LHR-SYD

    But QR do fly AMS-DOH-SYD

To get the best advice you need to give fill details.

This is what is confusing me! AMS-LHR-SYD on BA should not be fewer avios than LHR-SYD, but if OP is referring to QR, then they can’t use the companion voucher.

Apologies for the confusion – this was AMS-LHR-SYD. However it looks like that availability has gone away overnight, so it’s back to LHR-SYD FOR 380,000 avios.

Adding AMS would have increased the number of avios you needed, so I don’t think you can have been seeing that on BA.

    This is what I’m seeing:

    Screenshot-2024-04-06-at-11-27-15

    Outbound:

    AMS – LHR BA0431
    LHR – SYD BA0015

    Inbound:

    SYD – LHR BA0016
    LHR – AMS BA0428

Not sure how flexible you are on dates but Qatar has seats departing LHR on 6th Sept and returning on 16th Sept (later dates available for both outbound and return) for a total of 360,000 AVIOS for 2 passengers in J
Didn’t check taxes/fees – but when I booked this trip some weeks ago (for 2025) the total taxes/fees were about £1,200

Obviously not using a 2-4-1 voucher – but seems better value than the figures above. And Qatar instead of BA – which most would agree is far better.

And how many avios for LHR-SYD? Should be less without the AMS legs.

380,000! Not sure why it’s so high although one leg is peak.

We want to go for Aug, so fairly stuck with the date unfortunately. Ultimately, even topping up 300,000 avios and paying the taxes is cheaper than the current fare of £11k for 2 on BA.

Have you looked at cash fares on other airlines or departing from other airports? I wouldn’t be happy about an outlay of £5K on an award booking where you’re not going to earn any avios or TPs.

I assuming you’re seeing CW because of the 241, so no option to pay for PE and UUA?

It’s high because it’s the longest route BA fly!

Have you clicked on the ‘other pricing options’ link as that will give other pricing options

Considering it took me a day to even get to the page of seeing the quote, call it PTSD!

AMS-LHR-SYD should still be more avios than LHR-SYD though, if the dates for the SYD leg are the same (I.e. not moved to a peak date because of the connection)

We’re not seeing all the optiosn though are we?

It shouldn’t matter as the first option will always be the highest number of avios?

Is it showing non RFS pricing?

I would of thought that Peak LHR-SYD return would be a max of 340000 based on the charts – not able to do a dummy booking to see for myself, so forgive me if way off

Yep – I get that too. Other options:
    324750 Avios + £ 1,569.64
    300000 Avios + £ 1,821.64
    226250 Avios + £ 3,091.64
    183750 Avios + £ 4,771.64
    133500 Avios + £ 6,451.64

    LHR/SYD – same dates is 315,000 AVIOS + £1,500.00
    Other options:
    295000 Avios + £ 1,760.00
    275000 Avios + £ 1,980.00
    208000 Avios + £ 3,200.00
    170000 Avios + £ 4,800.00
    122500 Avios + £ 6,400.00

Not sure why OP its seeing 380,000 AVIOS – as expected it is less AVIOS to go from LHR as compared with AMS

The inbound is a split leg – would that push things up?

Ah yes, possibly – though I don’t know why it’s pricing up like that if you’re not doing a stopover? Calling to book might resolve that.

I’ve just called BA – they were getting 380,000 as well. Moving dates to legs that are seen as one sector seemed to have got it down to 315,000 again – outbound peak and inbound off-peak.
