Forums Payment cards American Express Bonus points for Platinum as a current Gold member

I just called to enquire about upgrading my gold card to a platinum and was told they would give me a 20k bonus points on a spend if I upgraded, but that the offer online of the 60k points plus travel credit I couldn’t get. Which I expected.

However the lady on the phone then said that if I applied online for a new platinum metal card then that would supersede this and I would be entitled to the points and the credit and then they could link my MR rewards account over the phone.

I’m pretty sure she’s got it wrong as the website says that you can’t get the bonus if you have had another MR account in the last 24 months. Which I have.

So have they changed this rule or has she given me duff info?

Having gold precludes you from a platinum SUB till you’ve had the 2 year break. Amex CS are notorious for not knowing their own policies. You could try holding them to this but it would probably entail a bit of a fight!

Fun fact. I got a phone call this morning from the same rep apologising that she got the information wrong and was going off over info. As an apology they gave me some MR points.

How much did they give you, out of curiosity?

I was going to say, I certainly wouldn’t do a fresh application as you wouldn’t even be entitled to the 20k without upgrading your Gold.

I am also thinking of upgrading my Gold to Plat, but waiting for them to increase the bonus (think it was 40k at some point last year). I thought they may have had the offer synced with the current SUB, but I’m fine to wait.
