Book PE with points, upgrade to UC with cash

Hi guys

Apologies if asked elsewhere.

Maldives routes are absolutely craaaazzzzyyy for points for UC – looking at between 155 and 300k per person per route plus taxes. PE seems pretty fixed however at about 80k.

Per person it’s about $1600 per person per route PE, for UC its about $2500.

If I were to use my points to get a PE seat, and then upgrade with cash to UC, how much would be the upgrade be? Would it be the difference between a cash PE and UC seat, even though I bought my PE seat with points?

If so obviously makes sense to just do that rather than buying points to get me where I need to be

It wouldn’t necessarily be that price, no. The easiest thing to do is to call them and ask. They’ll caveat heavily with “if you do it right now!”, of course.

I am not VS expert but I believe the only ways you’d be able to upgrade a reward seat with cash are to do a bid or some kind of special offer , most likely only at the airport. The price won’t have any relation to the cash fare difference
