Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club Booking Avios flight for someone else

  • 39 posts

I should know the answers to this but would appreciate clarity.

I want to book an Avios return flight ORD-LHR-ORD but I will not be travelling on the flight. In the past when using Avios I have always been one of the passengers.
I know I can’t use an Amex 2 for 1 voucher if I am not travelling.

Does it matter if I am not travelling?
Does it matter that the flight will originate in the USA?
Does the passenger have to be in a Household account and does it matter either way?

There is Avios availability in both BA and AA. If booking in Club/Business does this have any bearing on lounges access at ORD? I usually get Flagship access but have always returned on BA. I know AA lounge access rules are often different from BA.
The passenger doesn’t have any Oneworld status.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help.

I think the passenger would need to be in your HHA or “travel companions” (or whatever it’s called now!) They don’t have to live at your address. Should be fine as long as you don’t have lots of avios bookings for other people originating outside your country of residence.

If you google “One World lounges”, you can search your airport and get a list of lounges and who has access to each one. I don’t know if AA and BA have separate lounges at ORD.

No you don’t need to be in a Household account with them to book a flight for them. Nor do they need to be in your travel companions list. If you’re in a Household account then they’ll need to be in your friends and family list I believe. Does not matter you’re not travelling unless as you rightly say you’re using an Amex 2-4-1.

They will get Lounge access by virtue of their ticket as they’re travelling internationally.

If booking AA transatlantic, do NOT book through BA unless you enjoy paying extra surcharges to BA. Transfer your avios to either QR/AY for much less surcharges.

Hence I said “your HHA, not A HAA”. They do need to be added to the BAEC account somewhere, which is what I was getting at. You can’t just book a ticket for anyone.

I had it in my head that travel companions had replaced f & f, for some reason.

Nope, you can book avios tickets for anyone if you’re not in a HHA. I have done this, and have just added the passenger details on booking. It may then add these passengers to my travel list but no requirement to do it before booking
