Trying to work out the best way to get flights to JNB from either MAN or LHR. going out seams easy enough, but coming back availability is poor. I’m going to try and ring up at 1am when the flights are released. I thought I’d check cash prices for one way, fully expecting them to be ridiculous, however there seems to be a strange abnormality with this. If you look at one way flights from say Nairobi, or LAX the cost is much higher than booking a return, however flights from JNB seem to be priced at exactly the same as the segment would be as part of the return. Just curious as to if anyone knows why this is, is there some regulation in SA that forces this?

If you mean cash fares then it’s just market based I think, some markets do seem to get reasonable one way pricing . I flew one way from Thailand via KL to London with BA once and it was about half the price of a return + had a very low cancellation fee.
Im looking logged into my BA account, using a voucher to show extra availability. It seems hard to get when booking the day they are released, but it seems to be a route where they release extra availability nearer the time. If I knew it was regulation that meant the cash price of a one way was the same price as a segment on a return I would feel comfortable just booking the outbound with Avios and waiting for the return if I couldn’t get it by phoning up, knowing that worst case I could just book a reasonable priced 1 way cash fare if they didn’t show up. Virgin shoes the same cash price abnormality when bookings one way from SA too.
