Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club The ‘How to book the return leg with 2-4-1 companion voucher’ thread

  • 1 post

Sorry it must be buried in here somewhere but I’ve not been able to find it.

We have a 2-4-1 that is due to expire in the middle of a planned trip. Plan is to do t-355 bookings, is the voucher expiry going to be a problem adding on the return after the voucher’s expiry?

I could clearly book it as a single pack (as only the outward has to be in expiry) but the wording in the Ts & Cs has me a little nervous over doing it in two stages.

The outbound needs to be booked before voucher expiry.
    The inbound can be later.

Outbound has to be flown by the expiry date. I booked an inbound several months after the expiry date a couple of years ago, BA agent refunded the 50% avios without quibble.

Hello, I have been trying to scour this chat but giving up as there are so many pages and little one just keep nagging me to go and play the water outside as it is 30+ deg c. today.

Anyway, we are looking to arrive in LHR/LGW early morning but the flight (using 2-4-1 voucher and T-355); however as you know that the connecting flight to regional airport is not yet available till the next day. How do you get around this?

Get this long haul flight through call centre first and call later to add the regional / short hall leg?

    Many thanks.

Yes just call and ask them to add the domestic leg when it’s released. This SHOULD be free, but there have been reports recently of BA charging people avios and/or fees.

Hope you’re enjoying the sun and water, it’s freezing here!

Can you add a return to a one way booking after you’ve flown the way out?

No, you need to have booked the return at least 24 hours before the outbound flight. After you have flown, you can change the date of the return within the 12 month ticket validity subject to Avios availability and you will need to pay a change fee.

I’m new here, and I Have tried to read through most of the 59 pages (!) of this thread to get answers, but I wanted to get the most up to date advice.
I have booked an outbound (LHR – CPT @T-355 2 nights ago) with 241 online, and obviously the stressful bit is getting the return leg booked. I’ve tried calling speculatively on +1 800 452 1201 (US Exec Club?) as advised by BA Los Angeles CS office, at 2350 but never got off the queue ( held till 0015 to see if I’d get an answer).

Also, I’ve seen advice about booking the return leg with all Avios and then claiming a 50% refund. Presumably this is a fallback position if I fail at T-355 to find availability on my return date, as obviously I can’t do it before.

One more thing, Where’s best to call in the world at midnight T-355? USA or Japan? Is there a choice of numbers to call?
    TIA

You’d book the return leg online with full avios plus the cash element, but there still needs to be award availability. You’ve picked a very difficult redemption so JNB might be a feasible plan B.

I’ve never called at midnight, but the there’s been quite a lot of discussion on this thread over the past few weeks about the best call centres for success so maybe work backwards?! IIRC the US call centre has started refusing to make these bookings recently.

Heya, please excuse me as this is not directly relevant to the topic of this thread, but I am seeking respondents to provide their views on the benefits offered by the British Airways Executive Club program as a part of my undergraduate dissertation.

My name is Andrew Hoang, and I’m an undergraduate student at the University of Bristol. I am conducting research on whether business and leisure travellers perceive the benefits of frequent flyer programs differently as a part of my undergraduate dissertation, and I would like to do a case study on British Airways Executive Club members.
If you’re a member of the British Airways Executive Club, I’d greatly appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to complete my questionnaire. Your input will be valuable in helping me understand how these programs meet travellers’ needs.

    Here’s the link: [[https://forms.office.com/e/0x9bXiqbax]

Alternatively, you can scan the QR code below to access the questionnaire.
If you would like to find out more about my research, as well as other participation information, I have attached supporting information in the cover page of my questionnaire that you can read upon before deciding if you are interested in participating.

Thank you for your time and support!

So today is the day to book my return from GCM and I decided that as I currently have access to the gold line I would call and ask BA to add to the return to my outbound, instead of booking it online and requesting 50% avios back.

Well, what a palaver, even with a very helpful and competent agent it took 28 minutes to get it sorted, including having to log in and out of bookings, provide endless security details and input card details twice! And when it was finally done I’ve been advised to get back in touch if it hasn’t been reticketed in 7 days …

Back to online bookings for me!

*Also just realised I’m not going to be able to select my seats until the ticketing is sorted, this totally sucks 😡😂

I’ve never had any problems calling to add the inbound, certainly no logging in required, and have always been able to see the booking in MMB and reserve seats straight away, even without the updated e-ticket email.

Only used the online full Avios method to do a bit of ‘tax avoidance’ 😉

I wouldn’t say there were problems, it just took an inordinate amount of time compared to booking the return online and then requesting 50% avios back. I’m also now slightly regretting that if something better comes up on VS, or we want to change where we end the trip, it’ll be complicated to cancel the inbound. I suppose it’s confirmed that my usual approach of booking online and keeping separate PNRs, is actually the right one for me!

I can select seats in the app this morning, though not on the website.

I will also reiterate that BA requires the same Amex to pay the surcharges on both legs (i.e. same name and card details on the outbound and inbound)!

You have me wondering about a possible conundrum of my own. We have used a 241 for a return trip, outward booked before voucher expiry date and return booked on a separate PNR after booking the return online and ringing in for a refund of the 50% avios.
We may now need to fly the outbound later and so make a new booking not using the voucher as it will be after the voucher expiry date. Fair enough.
We don’t want to lose the inbound as availability is very tight. Are we stuffed?

Just cancel the outbound online. Shame about the voucher validity though.

I am hoping to book HKG to LHR for the return segment of a 2-4-1 booking (Outbound to SYD) and following @NorthernLass’s examples I was planned to book it online and as for 1/2 the Avios back as this would be more tax efficient.
However, I also need to call the next day to add on the final leg (LHR -> BHD), and I wondered if adding this on will reset the tax calculation and return to the full £287.50 pp?

As with many things, it may depend on how amenable/competent/pedantic/lenient the agent you get turns out to be. Keep it simple and straightforward – the domestic leg should be free at this stage so hopefully there won’t be any discussions involving cash.

So best to do it in two separate calls. One to just add domestic (and hope little changes) and then a second call or Tweet DM to refund 50% avios?

Probably easier just to do it all on one call. They might question why you didn’t, otherwise.

Wanted to give a quick summary of my experience of using the 2-4-1 voucher. We’ve made our mind we want to visit Cape Town. Last week, I did the steps online, however was late by few mins and of course the seats were gone. Tried again 2 days ago at midnight, managed to get to Payment Page, but the booking failed (of course, some agent managed to snap them). We decided last night for my partner (Silver Status) to call the US Silver line, however a lady told us that we didn’t call the right no. and gave us a different no. for Avios Bookings (?, one which was the general Blue member one). We got really frustrated as it was already 23:55 and no chance for us to get through.

Long story-short I have another attempt to book it online and happy to report I’ve managed to secure 2 Club World seats: LHR-> CPT for 7th Feb 26. At 24:01 we were nervously waiting for the booking to get through, but it seems we got lucky this time. Now, the research begins on how we will approach the return leg.

Anyways, my experience might not be relevant, but it seems we weren’t as lucky as we thought with calling. Could somebody point me if there’s info about Silver US No. for calling about Avios booking? Not clear to me.

I didn’t know there were separate status lines for the US? But several readers have posted recently about being turned away by the general US number when calling to book at midnight.

Good news about your seats, anyway!

I’ve been Bronze the past few years, so I have been phoning the US Bronze number and haven’t had any issues with making Avios bookings this way.

If I recall correctly though, is there not a recorded message/menu where you need to hit the corresponding number to get to the specific team that handles Avios bookings?

    Hello fellow travellers,

I have been trying to look for Avios flights with 2-4-1 to SJU (Puerto Rico) but am not sure if I am doing something wrong… if I go on Book with Avios on the BA website and input random dates (say 05th of july to 19th of July) London – SJU the website says that there are no flights whatsoever, not even connections… am I missing something?

    thanks
