Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

I’ve booked a reward flight including a domestic connection – although it is a bit fiddly since I must fly MAN-LHR and then manually transfer for the main leg LGW-CUN. For this reason I chose to break my journey, so I’ll fly down to London the night before, do the transfer bit and then settle comfortably in a hotel for the night.

I was surprised to see that I was able to select a ‘Club Europe’ seat for the domestic connection. Therefore I will be able to use the business lounge at MAN before my flight (any comments on which one it will be / which one to choose?)

My question really is: will I be able to use the lounge at LGW the next day on the strength of one leg of the journey being business class? (I have previously been successful in a reverse situation – using the lounge at MAN when the first leg of a journey was only economy, but a later leg had been upgraded to business.)

Unless LGW-CUN itself is in J or F then no.

As far as I know it shouldn’t have worked in MAN either on your other journey.

Coming off a long haul J/F connecting to an onwards economy flight on the same day does usually get you into the lounge.

I would have speculated that it might just have been because I asked nicely – but it was the check-in agent that said it would probably be ok, and then at the lounge they didn’t question!

FYI it’s a quirk of avios bookings when you select the stopover option, you can select CE regardless of which cabin you’re in on the long haul sector. I use this quite a lot for a few extra perks after a PE flight home!
