Hello.
I don’t understand the BA club world Avios pricing for London to Cairo. It seems high for a 5 hour journey.
The default peak date return price is 160k + £180
The 2nd one under the ‘more pricing options’ list (which I’m told is usually nearest to the pre RFS prices) is 75k + £770
I tried comparing to Dalaman (Turkey) which is a 4hr 15 min flight.
The default peak date return price is 54.5k + £1
The 2nd one under the ‘more pricing options’ list is 39.5k + £35
Both routes operated by a narrow body. Only 45 minutes flight time difference.
Anyone able to tell me why Cairo costs so much more? at least triple if my maths (and valuation of Avios points) is correct.
Thanks.
Turkey is on Reward Flight Saver (RFS), Cairo isn’t. Same as Amman. And yes, it’s crap – it’s medium-haul and you get short-haul planes.
It’s ridiculous. Tel Aviv is the same cost (160k plus £180) but BA flies widebody aircraft. Same as VS.
I used a Barclays upgrade voucher for a one way booking for 2 adults, on a peak date.
Cost 55k + £180
That feels like a good result – I think?
Ironically, until now I had no use for my Barclays vouchers as I couldn’t find any scenarios where my Amex Companion vouchers couldn’t do a better job.
55k + £180
I used the Barclays upgrade for 50k and £275 to Shanghai so shows you how far off Cairo pricing is one way. You cannot compare but with Wizzair flying for a pittance offpeak £80-90 return to Cairo, it really takes the biscuit.
55k + £180

Are those two really comparable? The Cairo example is for two people peak, while your Shanghai one is the Avios/cash for one person, off peak. I know it would have spoilt the narrative if you had quoted Shanghai as 100k/155k Avios off peak/peak Avios and £550 .

True. You get a gold star.
