Can I swap Platinum for Gold in my bid to maximise avios?

Need some advice…
Seeing as the Amex Gold and Platinum both provide Membership Reward points (i.e. same ‘reward family’), I would expect to be able to swap the Platinum for the Gold in this guide and be able to hit all the points:

Is my assumption correct? Only asking as this article seems to suggest otherwise:

No, your assumption is not correct. You need to look at the small print on the gold card which will explain why.
If you are talking about sign up bonus, no, Gold require you to not have had any amex in the last 24 months. Plat says you need to not have had a MR earning card in 24 months. so if you take out the marriott or nectar card first then you don’t qualify for gold bonus but do for plat.
