I’m sorry to be so needy, I do search things but often cant find what I am looking for. If I have already referred OH for a Gold card, can I refer him for a BAPP via my link and get the bonus? TIA.

Apologies I think this should be in the AMEX forum

Yes you can. Be aware that since earlier this year a number of people have found the ability to refer has been removed from their account. It was thought, no evidence, that this may be due to quality of referrals being made.

Thanks Scott. My OH has a stable credit file and is just coming to the end of his 3K for taking out gold he wont be cancelling it for a number of months if at all. He was going to apply for the BAPP of his own volition, but a conversation I had on here yesterday made me understand that I could refer for a different cards to the one I have..

No need to apologize, we’re all here to help each other out. As for your question, yeah, you can totally refer OH for a BAPP using your link even if you referred them for a Gold card before. Double-dipping on those bonuses is a sweet move.

Sorry I think I hit report not quote first. Well we have just done the application so fingers crossed. He didn’t get an automatic yes. They just said they will contact him soon, presumably with a yes or a no.

I used to refer myself when cycling cards & can no longer make referrals

HI Scott, I’m not sure how I would self refer, would I just send the link to myself in an email and go through that as though I was a new customer ? Surely the system would note that I had the same name DOB, home address etc., Or is the system so automated that it doesn’t pick up this kind of thing in the short term. I’m not planning on doing it, but was just interested.

Yes, clicking through your own link was/is simple.
After a painful change of amex policy in the US, self-referral is no longer considered safe here.
For what it’s worth, I self-referred once and was one of those recently unable to make referrals. In my case I am now able to make referrals again.

Hi Zio, sorry to hear that, but glad you got it back – seems like some kind of manual intervention takes place, rather than it being an IT issue. I guess what I haven’t had I won’t miss. Already worried about making this referral for OH. I’m going to check my AMEX account to see if the referral link has been removed. This is only my second one, but the general feeling I get from reading this site, including many older posts, is that lots of different tips and tricks have been stopped or clamped down on. Don’t want to get banned from Amex.

@Misty Thanks, but I was entirely comfortable about not being able to refer: I love a SUB but I’ve always viewed my Amex cards as credit cards rather than a referral program. I don’t think it was an IT issue as such, but also not totally manual. When the ability to refer reappeared I got an email to the effect of “Hurray, it’s your turn to refer”. Personally I don’t think it was anything to do with self-referral.

In any case, I would not worry at all about referring your OH. It is and always has been (in a way self-referral never was) common practice.

While it’s true that many very profitable point earning routes have been closed off, there is a danger of wearing rose-tinted spectacles. Opportunity is always knocking!
