I have currently booked a one way flight with avios using a barclaycard “upgrade voucher” for two people. There are now two avios seats on the return.
I have an expiring 2-4-1 voucher that I would like to use. I want to cancel the booking with the barclaycard voucher and then book both the outbound and inbound on the 2-4-1 voucher.
The problem is, there are no reward seats on the outbound. If I cancelled, would the seats be re-released? I booked them the moment they were released.
Is my best option to book the inbound using the 2-4-1 and wait until availability appears on the outbound and then call BA to add to the existing booking?
The seats may be released back to inventory, but not guaranteed. From what I’ve read on here, if they were issued as part of the initial guaranteed batch of reward seats (at D-355) then you should be fine, but if it was extra inventory released later it may be less sure.
I think your best option would be to call BA and ask if they could perform the cancellation and rebooking with the new voucher, they may have a better chance of hanging on to your seats, or at least be able to advise if they think you’ll lose them.
If it’s the “new-style” 241 voucher (which most of them are at this point), have you used it to search for extra availability on the outbound? If there is some, you could just book the whole thing online and then cancel your Barclays booking.
The problem with booking the “inbound” on the 241, is that BA is likely to see it as the “outbound” of a separate trip and refuse to add a leg which is to be flown sooner.
My understanding is if you cancel more than 45 days prior and they’ve only released the initial batch of seats then they’ll come back. But you’ve got no way to know if they released anymore afterwards that have been booked, so it’s a risky play !
