Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Cancellation and full refund flying Iberia using BA Avios and money

  • 4 posts

Planning to use AVIOS for one way tickets, business class, 2 pax, Santiago de Chile to Stockholm.

I dont have enough BA Avios for the tickets so an additional payment is necessary.

The actual flight is an Iberia flight via Madrid.

In the price details there are 2 major items:

Taxes, fees, carrier charges AND Price per person

In case of a cancellation there is a service fee of approx USD 80 per person which is OK.

My question: Will there be a full refund of the above items ( taxes, fees, carrier charges and Price) and Avios in case of a cancellation 24 hours before departing??

If a refund, will it be from BA or Iberia?

If you book through ba.com refund will be from BA.

But not sure how you are pricing. Are you going via Book with Avios and then just using less Avios, more cash?

I don’t think you’re pricing it that way, but rather booking cash ticket and reducing the cost with Avios.

In the first case the cancellation fee is always £35 per pax.

In the second case, it’s based on underlying fare and I think you get cash back in lieu of Avios (someone correct me if wrong) as you are effectively selling your Avios back to BA for cash.

    Thanks for the reply.

I am using BA.com using the menu item “Book with Avios” and as I dont have enough Avios I am topping up with cash. Ie your first suggestion.

So my question is: Will there be a full refund of the above items ( taxes, fees, carrier charges and Price) and Avios in case of a cancellation 24 hours before departing?? (Excl of the above cancellation fees USD 25+55 that was found on https://www.britishairways.com/en-se/executive-club/spending-avios/booking-and-service-fees)
The flight is operated by a BA partner, Iberia

    Thanks in advance

I don’t know the answer to your question, but one additional thing. Have you priced it up going direct through Iberia? Taxes and Avios will probably be different, potentially substantially lower.

You can transfer your Avios to Iberia easily, but only if you have an Iberia account open for more than 90 days (if you don’t, perhaps somebody you trust to book it for you does)

Interestingly I booked some flights (ex-Bogota) recently and BA was cheaper than Iberia! I was surprised as I thought the same as you, Iberia was cheaper for taxes & charges , but seems like it’s worth cross checking

    @OP
    – you’ll get a refund of everything minus the cancellation fee as you say. Or you could take a “Future travel voucher” and pay no fees, just store the Avios and taxes for another booking (on BA or any OW partner you can book using Avios)

Might be due to the different Avios peak dates, or something entirely different, always pays to check both!

Yes, correct (or take a “Future Travel voucher” and pay no fees)
