Our morning flight (6:40)with BA to Amsterdam is cancelled after checked in at the Gatwick airport. They are trying to reschedule for the evening flight from Heathrow. I am wondering if we accepted the rescheduled flight do we still have the right for the claim.
I also booked an IHG hotel using my free night voucher for tonight stay. Unfortunately the cancellation cut off date for tonight was yesterday. Mean that I will lost the night voucher in this case. Can this be claimed via Amex insurance or BA etc.
Depends on the reason for the cancellation if you’re due any compensation.
If you are still flying surely you’ll still need the Amsterdam hotel?
If not then contact the hotel and tell them the circumstances and they may be willing to help you. If not then it’s one for insurance. They would expect you to have tried the hotel first anyway.
Apparently the cancellation is due to short of crew members. The available flight is only at night and reached Amsterdam is almost 11pm. If I go for tomorrow flight will I still entitled for EC261 as a delay etc?
Two things here:
– compensation: as your flight was cancelled 14 days before take off (in this case clearly) you have the right for compensation if the new flight makes you arrive to Amsterdam 3 hours later. This is obviously not an exceptional circumstance so accepting the next day flight will still allow you to claim compensation but as it is a short flight it will be a small one
– right of care: even if the airline books you on a flight tomorrow they still have to help you with cost like a hotel at the airport (or a cab back home and back again), food (no alcohol), phone calls, etc. You should ask the airline first but you can also book stuff yourself and then claim the cost back.
Unfortunately the airline is not going to pay for stuff you missed. That is where you can use your insurance or similar.
Going to the the rescheduled night flight now after various considerations. But got 10hrs wait in the airport. Can I book a day hotel as part of duty care. The one thing is the hotel is very expensive now.
What the heck is the compensation for?
Use it on the day hotel, take the train to Brighton and have a day by the beach. Have you checked Eurostar – or a flight somewhere nearby to AMS with another airline (the trains in the Netherlands are pretty good).
Life’s too short to spend a Saturday hanging around an airport – go for it!

Wording is usually “if we cancel and book you on the next day flight bla bla bla..”
Fees like a 10 hr wait will trigger compensation payment (which you can use to pay for hotel, food, etc.)
But don’t expect BA to pay for a hotel simply because you don’t want to be at the airport all day long.
