Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Cancelled JAL Reward Flights Booked via BA using Avois – Fees?

  • 3 posts

Hello, wondering if any of you can give me some guidance before I try to get though to BA.

Last October, I booked 3 reward flights from FRA – Tokyo via JAL for September 2023. The tickets were booked via BA using Avios. At the end of January 2023, we had to changed our dates and are now going in June 2023 (again using reward flights, but on Finnair).

When I cancelled the flights, I was fully expecting the £35 per person cancellation fee. What I wasn’t expecting was the £31 per person fee that has been marked as Non-Refundable Tax/Fees. However, after looking at BAs website, it looks like since we were flying from Germany, we should have been charged 42.50 Euros per person and not the £35 per person – bit confused. Anyone out there know what fees I should have been charged before I bother trying to get through to BA? Are there non-refundable EU taxes that I am unaware of?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

    €42.50 is currently £ 37.15

Not sure I’d pursue that one with them!

There are no EU taxes. Taxes are levied by individual nations. Whether a refund of the other £31 is applicable depends on exactly what the charge is for and whether it’s a German or Japanese charge.

Someone else has exactly the same question as well on flyer talk! Must be a popular route!

Thank you. I posted on both forums. LOL.

I am just trying to figure out what the charge is.

I understood the £35 cancel fee per person to BA, but I can’t figure out what the other £30.90 per person fee is for. £105 to BA, but where did the other £92.70 go and for what?

Just seems like it should be one or the other according to BA’s site. I guess I will have to ring them.
