I have a BAH booking for October, which is fully paid up for reasons I won’t bore with.
I also upgraded one leg from WT+ to J with Avios.
If I cancel, what’s my liability? I think it’s the £50 deposit and maybe a £35 fee to reverse the upgrade, but would appreciate any advice.
TIA
Do you mean cancel the entire holiday, or just the upgrade?
If you cancel a BAH you don’t get any of what you have paid back, which is why it’s not a great idea to pay the balance too far in advance. £50 deposit sounds very low though, it’s usually a minimum of £120. Of course if you’ve had to cancel for medical issues, insurance might cover it.
No idea about the upgrade.
Oh no, trust me, paying the full amount made lots of sense. I’ll just cram everything into the truncated stay in that case…
Cancellation amounts depend on when you cancel not necessarily if you’ve paid just the deposit, made interim payments or the balance in full.
The actual terms will be on your booking email but on one of mine it states
Before the balance due date the penalty is the deposit amount (and it states deposit not total amount paid so far).
Between the balance due date and up to 72 hours before travel you lose 60%.
Cancel later than that you lose everything.
If you have any doubt call BA Hols. The agents are incredibly helpful and will work with you rather than just say “tough”.
OK, so I just did this…
If you are in MMB, click on cancel my booking. It then details what the cancellation fees are at what stage of the process. This confirmed that my original booking for £952 was a £50 deposit and a further £902. I will be charged the £50, with the balance sent back to the credit card. That was also in an e-mail that I received after the event.
There was also a reference to the avios being refunded so hopefully they just drop back in at some point, too. Will chase if needs be. But absolutely no harm in paying down the balance early (aside from BA getting a free loan)
