Forums Payment cards American Express Cancelling Business Platinum without losing my Amex points

  • 9 posts

Hi, I was about to cancel my business platinum card this afternoon until i realised I would lose my Amex points. I asked the Amex chat assistant if I could downgrade to the business non fee basic card so I could keep my points. This was declined I was only offered the gold business card downgrade. As I don’t spend over £20,000 quarterly the gold card isn’t much use to me.
My question is if I applied for the non fee basic PERSONAL card could I then keep my Amex points? If so would I still be eligible for personal platinum card sign up bonus?? As I’ve never had a gold or platinum personal card

Yes, you’re fine and you’ll get a bonus. If you can hit the target spend, get Platinum and downgrade later.

The key is that when you register the personal card, you must use the same email address as you used for the business card. This will ensure Amex doesn’t open a new MR account.

Thanks for this. What if instead I opened a basic non fee personal card using the same email address. Would I then still keep my points?
The non fee cards don’t give points so I’m not sure if this would work?

    Do Membership Rewards points expire?

Unlike many other schemes your Membership Rewards Points have no expiration date.

    However, please remember that:-
    • If you end your Card Account agreement and there are no other Linked Cards on your Points Account, you will have 30 days from the date you request this to redeem your Points. If you do not redeem your Points within 30 days, they will be forfeited.

I spoke to support who also said:
We can transfer points to Airline/Hotel partner account affiliated with Amex Membership reward program within 30 days of cancellation. After cancellation, you can call or chat with us to check options for redeeming your Membership Rewards points.
-Points will forfeit after 30 days from the cancellation date unless there’s an active linked account.
