Forums Payment cards American Express Cancelling Gold and open ARCC to keep points

  • 10 posts

Hello, I’m thinking to close my amex gold but I was reading the article about keeping the points opening an ARCC.
Did anyone do it here? It works? Thanks!

Yes, but apply for ARCC first and active the new card in your existing account before cancelling Gold.

Thanks! Do you know how much time there is between beginning of new year of the card and time to cancel the membership and getting the money back as it’s not pro rata anymore?

    Thanks

You can also try to downgrade without having to make a new application.

Pro rata refunds do still exist, but from you starting the application for the ARCC to activating it in your existing account takes days, not weeks.

As @philuk says above, asking for a downgrade could be the simplest option…but be prepared to duck when they start throwing thousands of MR points in your direction as a bribe to keep Gold.

When the rewards card is open check that it shows the same points balance before you cancel gold. Sometimes a new mR account gets created.

As long as you link the new ARCC to your existing account where your Gold card sits, then that won’t happen.

That’s not true. It can create a new MR account even if registered to the same online account.

Okay, maybe you’re correct, but that’s never happened to me. Maybe I’ve just been very fortunate.

Bare in mind if you’ve had any retention bonus recently they can’t downgrade you as apparently the downgrade is a form of retention ‘bonus’.
