I will probably be cancelling my Platinum card in the new year, unless I am offered a decent retention bonus. I will be due a pro rata refund of the annual fee but am wondering where the credit goes if the card has been cancelled. Can someone please enlighten me?
Can go to a bank account or to another Amex credit card account. You choose when you ring to cancel.
The easiest way is to leave a balance on your card when you cancel which the refund can be netted against. I cancelled last week and the credit was applied the next day and then I cleared the small balance. You have more control owing Amex than them owing you.
You can get it refunded back to a bank account, not sure if transferring it to another Amex card sends any spend targets backwards so I’ve always opted for bank transfer
Is the pro rata refund calculated on a daily basis or just full months? Thanks.
It’s calculated on a daily basis and is credited to your closed account by default. You can then ask for the credit balance to be transferred to another card (which won’t lose you any points on that card) or to your bank account. This can be fine via the online chat or phone.
Apologies to reopen an old topic, but like the OP above I’ll be closing my Platinum card soon and it’s the only Amex I currently hold in my name. I am a supplementary card holder on my OH account, so could the pro rata refund be applied to that card?
As @Entitled said above (and I have always done) make sure that you owe more than the refund when you cancel.
also move any points or you will lose them.

No

Ask them to send a cheque. You’ll receive it within a few days.
