Took out an AE premium card in Jan 23 and have now acquired my Companion Ticket, I rang to cancel card but they said that I need the card to pay for the taxes on the Companion Ticket. They are pro rata rebating cards taken out before June this year. They said I can transfer to non fee paying card but Im worried that my Companion Ticket will then only be valid in Economy (we have enough avios for Club seats. Should I keep my card as my ticket is valid for 2 years? What would you advise please. Thanks Debs
Hi, not sure if your new but this has been asked more than a million times and its still the same. The taxes can be paid with ANY amex even your dogs one. as long as your 241 is in your BAEC account, your good to use on Business/first. the T&Cs are not being strictly adhered to but that could change at any point, as of this second, your fine.
Indeed, once the voucher is in your BAEC account as a Premium Voucher, Amex won’t be able to change it to the standard version if you downgrade to the free card. They cannot even revoke it if you cancel the card completely.
However, as zapato says, at the moment, BA’s IT just checks that an Amex card is being used with the voucher. If they feel inclined, in future, they may check that you used the card that you earned the voucher with. (possible, but not currently done routinely) The more likely problem, would be that you pay with the premium card, downgrade then alter your flights. At this point, BA would try taking payment from your old card which would fail. At this point, they are more likely to realise and cancel. (All worst case scenario stuff, as I too am a worrier!)
@FatherOfFour – BA/Amex did away with the requirement to pay with the card that earned the voucher about ten days ago. Now, officially any Amex will do which is presumably connected with the impending removal of pro-rata refunds. It’s not clear what clause 32 of the terms re remaining eligible for the promotion actually means given the change re use of cards.

Thanks @JDB I’m sure that would have been mentioned on here, but I missed it. Are the new Terms published now? I know Rob had the exclusive on what was coming. I recall one of the terms being a bit vague or ambiguous before – which is potentially clause 32 which you mention.

The term (para 17) re payment with any card has already been changed. They have actually slipped in quite a few changes since the current set of terms came into force from Sep 2021. While they are supposed to notify people, they can get around that if the changes are deemed beneficial.
